Guwahati: In a groundbreaking achievement, a team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) has successfully scaled an unclimbed peak, standing at 6,383 metres (20,942 ft), in the Gorichen range of the Arunachal Pradesh Himalayas. This previously unnamed peak, located in the Tawang-West Kameng region, was one of the most technically challenging summits in the area. To honour the spiritual legacy of His Holiness the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, the team has named the peak “Tsangyang Gyatso Peak.”
An Unforgettable Feat of Endurance and Skill
The NIMAS team faced daunting obstacles on their way to the summit, including navigating sheer ice walls, crossing treacherous crevasses, and tackling a 2-kilometer-long glacier. Despite these challenges, their determination led them to the summit of the peak, marking a significant milestone in Indian mountaineering history.
By naming the peak after Tsangyang Gyatso, NIMAS aims to celebrate his wisdom and pay tribute to his contributions to the Monpa community and beyond. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and this naming serves as a lasting homage to his influence in the region.
A Momentous Expedition in Indian Mountaineering:
The expedition to Tsangyang Gyatso Peak is being hailed as one of the most difficult undertakings in the history of NIMAS. The team braved unpredictable weather, steep ice walls, and deep crevasses that posed significant risks throughout the journey. However, their teamwork and relentless perseverance resulted in a historic ascent, shining a spotlight on India’s growing prominence in global mountaineering.
NIMAS has formally informed the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) about their ascent and the naming of the peak. The process to officially register “Tsangyang Gyatso Peak” is underway to ensure its inclusion on the official map.

This historic climb not only showcases the incredible natural beauty and cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh but also positions the region as a prime destination for mountaineering and adventure sports. The success of this expedition is expected to attract adventure enthusiasts and explorers from across the globe, putting Arunachal Pradesh on the global adventure tourism map.
