Turkey’s Erdogan Acknowledges New Reality: Skips Kashmir in UNGA, signalling acceptance of India’s sovereignty

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Erdogan’s silence on Kashmir underscores the influence India now wields in international forums, where it has successfully reframed the Kashmir issue as a purely internal matter, leaving little room for external intervention

In a notable departure from his usual rhetoric, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for the first time in years, refrained from mentioning Kashmir in his address at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This development is being hailed as a diplomatic victory for India, reflecting the growing global influence of Indian diplomacy and the stature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a world leader.

For years, Erdogan had used platforms like the UNGA to vocalize support for Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir, often echoing Islamabad’s call for international intervention. However, this time, his decision to stay silent on the Kashmir issue is a clear indicator of the success of India’s assertive yet strategic diplomatic efforts.

President Erdogan’s historical stance on Kashmir was a recurring diplomatic challenge for India. In his previous speeches at the UNGA, he consistently criticized India’s position in Kashmir, leading to diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Ankara. His strong alignment with Pakistan on the issue had been perceived as an effort to gain leadership among Muslim nations while sidelining India’s valid position, that Kashmir is a purely internal matter and integral part of Bharat.

The Kashmir issue had, in fact, strained India-Turkey relations, with India often responding strongly to Erdogan’s remarks. India had lodged protests through diplomatic channels, and the tensions affected bilateral ties, especially on trade and defense cooperation. However, the recent shift in Erdogan’s tone, particularly at the global stage of the UN, demonstrates that India’s diplomatic persistence has paid off.

Erdogan’s decision to skip mentioning Kashmir can be attributed to a series of significant shifts in global dynamics and India’s increasing diplomatic clout. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has transformed India into a global power, and this influence is being reflected in the way countries engage with New Delhi.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has emerged as an influential global player. With strong partnerships with Western powers like the U.S. and European Union, as well as closer ties with countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, India’s diplomatic influence has expanded significantly. Modi’s focus on building strategic alliances, while maintaining a balance between the West and the Global South, has elevated India’s standing in international affairs.

India’s rising economic stature also plays a crucial role in shaping international perceptions. Turkey, like many other countries, is keen to enhance economic ties with India, one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies. Erdogan’s silence on Kashmir can be interpreted as a pragmatic shift aimed at not jeopardizing Turkey’s economic and trade relations with India. India’s market potential is far too significant for global economies to risk alienation by bringing contentious political issues into diplomatic conversations.

Indian diplomacy under Prime Minister Modi has been characterized by assertiveness and clarity on core national interests. India’s consistent message that Kashmir is an internal matter and its firm responses to any attempts at internationalizing the issue have likely contributed to Erdogan’s changed stance. Indian foreign policy is no longer reactive; it is proactive, well-calibrated, and increasingly respected.

Turkey, under Erdogan, had previously sought to position itself as a champion of Muslim causes like Palestine and Kashmir. However, in recent years, even traditional backers of Pakistan, such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, have softened their stance on Kashmir, prioritizing their economic ties with India over political posturing. Turkey seems to be following a similar trajectory, recognizing that aligning too closely with Pakistan on Kashmir could isolate it from India and other key global players.

Erdogan’s omission of Kashmir in his UNGA speech should be viewed as more than just a tactical shift in Turkish foreign policy—it is a reflection of India’s growing dominance on the world stage. New Delhi’s deft diplomacy has ensured that the Kashmir issue is increasingly seen as an internal matter, and international forums like the UNGA are no longer platforms for external powers to interfere.

This diplomatic win for India sends a strong message to the world: India is now a key global power that commands respect, and any attempts to undermine its sovereignty will be met with assertive and effective diplomatic countermeasures.

At the heart of this diplomatic success is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. His ability to engage world leaders across political and ideological spectrums has positioned India as a global powerhouse. Whether through G20 summits, BRICS engagements, or bilateral meetings, Modi has consistently projected India as a nation that champions peace, development, and multilateral cooperation while firmly standing by its national interests.

Under Modi’s leadership, India has gained the confidence to project itself as a global leader that can engage on equal terms with major powers. His diplomatic outreach, whether with the U.S., Russia, European nations, or Middle Eastern states, has been instrumental in securing India’s place at the global high table. Erdogan’s retreat on the Kashmir issue is yet another example of the impact of Modi’s diplomacy on the world stage.

This shift demonstrates that India’s growing global influence is reshaping international discourse on critical issues, and countries like Turkey are recognizing the need to engage with India pragmatically. As the world watches, India continues to rise as a formidable force in global geopolitics, with Narendra Modi at the helm of this ascent, guiding the nation toward greater global leadership.
