New Delhi: In a shocking development, the official YouTube channel of the Supreme Court of India has fallen victim to a cyberattack, compromising its usual legal content with cryptocurrency-related videos. The breach has sparked widespread concern over the security of government digital assets and the integrity of judicial transparency online.

The Supreme Court’s YouTube channel, known for streaming critical hearings and verdicts of national importance, now displays the name “Ripple” instead of its rightful title. All previous videos, including recordings of significant hearings like the recent suo motu case on the tragic incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, have been set to private. Instead, viewers are greeted with a live stream titled “Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds To The SEC’s $2 Billion Fine! XRP Price Prediction,” featuring cryptocurrency-focused content unrelated to the court’s proceedings.

The cyberattack underscores vulnerabilities in online security protocols for government institutions, particularly those entrusted with sensitive legal matters. Authorities are actively investigating the breach to identify the perpetrators and restore the channel to its original state. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, along with cybersecurity experts, are collaborating to expedite the recovery process.

Livestreaming judicial proceedings has been a landmark initiative by the Supreme Court, aimed at promoting transparency and ensuring public access to justice under Article 21 of the Constitution. The platform has been pivotal in broadcasting hearings before constitution benches, cases impacting national governance, civil rights disputes, and electoral reforms.

The unprecedented nature of this cyber intrusion into the judiciary’s digital infrastructure has raised alarms about the adequacy of existing cybersecurity measures. Concerned stakeholders emphasise the urgent need for enhanced security protocols to safeguard government digital assets against future threats.

The Supreme Court has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Meanwhile, efforts to restore normalcy to the YouTube channel are ongoing, with assurances that steps are being taken to prevent such breaches in the future.
