Yadgiri: For the past few years, Yadgiri district has been witnessing a growing concern among the local Hindu population regarding alleged attempts by Christian missionaries to convert economically vulnerable families, particularly within the Dalit community. These allegations have sparked tension and unease in the district, with recent incidents further intensifying the situation.
On the evening of August 24, a group of six individuals, including a Christian foster and other church members, reportedly entered the Girinagar layout on the outskirts of Yadgiri city. The layout is predominantly inhabited by the Buduga Jangam community, which is economically disadvantaged and dependent on government assistance for housing and land. This community has become a focal point for the alleged conversion activities.
The missionaries are said to have visited the home of a recently converted Christian family, offering prayers in the name of Jesus Christ. What was once a community with no Christian presence has seen a notable increase in conversions, with the number of converted families rising from three to around thirty in just a few years. According to local residents, the group not only prayed but also attempted to persuade others in the layout to convert to Christianity.
Tensions escalated when members of the Buduga Jangam community noticed that the missionaries had placed their slippers on the wall of the local Anjaneya temple, an act that was perceived as disrespectful. The missionaries allegedly spoke disparagingly about Hindu gods and tried to convince the residents that Jesus Christ is the only true God, urging them to abandon Hinduism.
The residents of the layout angered by the perceived disrespect and the pressure to convert, immediately contacted the Yadgiri Nagar police station. Police officers arrived at the scene and questioned the Christian foster and the accompanying team. The missionaries were eventually allowed to leave after providing a written statement to the police.
The incident has left the residents of Girinagar layout worried about the future of their community. With thirty families already converted, there is a growing fear that the entire layout might eventually convert to Christianity. Similar concerns have been raised in other parts of Yadgiri city as well. Just last Monday, two Christian women were reportedly seen going door to door in Lakshmi layout , distributing religious leaflets and encouraging residents to join their faith after speaking critically of Hinduism.
Despite these incidents, there are accusations that local police have been reluctant to accept formal complaints from the community. This has led to frustration and anger, particularly among Bajrang Dal activists, who have warned of intensified protests if the situation continues. They have also held the district administration and police responsible for any further escalation.
There are growing suspicions that Christian missionaries have been quietly working in Yadgiri city for several years, focusing on converting vulnerable populations. As these activities become more visible, there is an increasing call for law enforcement to monitor and regulate such efforts more closely to prevent communal tensions from escalating further.
The situation in Yadgiri highlights the broader issues of religious conversion, community tensions, and the role of the state in maintaining harmony.
