Junior doctors and medical students stage protest against the murder of PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital
The father of a postgraduate trainee doctor from Kolkata, who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has expressed dissatisfaction with the West Bengal Government’s handling of the case, claiming that his daughter’s cremation was rushed. “The crematorium had three other bodies, but our daughter’s was burned first,” he told.
He stated, “There were three bodies at the crematorium, but our daughter’s was the first to be cremated. The Chief Minister talks about delivering justice, but the attempts have been unsatisfactory. We are not satisfied with Mamata Banerjee and have declined any compensation.”
The father of the 31-year-old trainee doctor, who was found dead with multiple injuries on August 9, has expressed his frustration with the Central Bureau of Investigation’s ongoing probe. He has alleged that the entire system is widely involved in the case.
He said, “No one from the department or the college cooperated with us. The entire department seems to be involved in this. The ongoing inquiry has yielded no results so far, but we still hope to see some progress.”
The victim’s mother disclosed that her daughter had been hesitant about going to the hospital in the days before the attack. “She would say she didn’t like going to RG Kar anymore,” the mother revealed.
She also complained, “We were not allowed to see our deceased daughter’s face, despite our repeated pleas. We were told there was an ongoing investigation, but they made us suffer a lot.”
“One person has been arrested, but I believe many more are involved in this incident. I suspect the entire department is responsible. The police have handled this poorly. It seems to me that the Chief Minister is trying to suppress the protest by imposing Section 144 today to prevent people from demonstrating,” she added.
The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in a seminar room at RG Kar Hospital on August 9. The following day, the Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case. Dissatisfied with the Kolkata Police’s handling of the investigation, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case.
It is noteworthy that Mamata Banerjee, who is now criticised in the hurried cremation of Kolkata rape victim, had previously raised concerns about alleged forced cremation in the Hathras rape case involving a 19-year-old Dalit girl in 2020. The Hathras incident occurred on September 14, and the victim died from her injuries on September 29. Reports indicate that she was allegedly cremated without her parents’ consent at 2:25 am on September 30 in the presence of police.
