A protesting doctor, Shreya Saw says, “We had a pan West Bengal General Body meeting today at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. We would like to express our gratitude to the High Court in light of its decision to transfer the case to the CBI in view of the failure of the previously appointed body in addition to the other favourable statements made by the Court. There have been multiple administrative and security lapses during and after this crime. No explanation or apology has come forth after the incompetence of SIT and its head with regards to the investigative failures. We believe our primary demand of justice decided unanimously in the previous General Body Meeting have still not been met and we will continue our fight for the same. Our first demand is the arrest of all culprits within the next 48 hours with proper evidence, official release and written declaration confirming the same from the investigating agency CBI. Written apology and order of resignation of higher authorities, the ex-principal, the MSVP, the Dean of Student Affairs, the HOD Chest Medicine, the Assistant Superintendent on that day of duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and they should be barred from holding any administrative or authoritative positions in any institutions for the remaining duration of their service period…”
On the morning of August 9, the lifeless body of the young doctor was discovered in a semi-nude state inside a seminar hall at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The 31-year-old, a second-year student specialising in chest medicine, had been on night duty and was last seen on the premises around 2 a.m. Her body was found by an intern who noticed her unresponsive phone and proceeded to the seminar room. The sight that greeted him was harrowing: the doctor’s body was partially covered by a blue bedsheet, with her kurta dishevelled and trousers missing. Nearby, her laptop, notebook, cell phone, and a water bottle were found, adding to the disturbing scene.
The initial autopsy report revealed the extent of the violence inflicted on the victim. The report indicated signs of sexual assault and a violent struggle. The doctor had sustained numerous injuries, including bleeding from her eyes and mouth, and a broken neck. The presence of blood stains, human hair, and a broken spectacle on the blood-stained mattress where her body was found further corroborated the brutality of the crime.
