Guwahati: Amid political unrest and violence against minority Hindus in Bangladesh an intruder from the neighbouring country was arrested in Assam after entering India via Meghalaya border.
Humayun Kabir, a national of Bangladesh, was recently captured in Dhing during a police operation. On August 4, 2024, Kabir, who travelled through Dawki, Meghalaya, to enter India from the Sylhet district of Bangladesh, was discovered in possession of two SIM cards from Bangladesh and a cell phone. His intention while entering Assam from Meghalaya was to exchange animals. After Kabir was located in the Nagaon district’s Khatowal Village, the residents reported him to the local police because they thought he was a foreigner. Then, when trying to buy livestock at the Dhing market, he was arrested.
Three other people, Motibur Rahman, Abul Hussain, and Maqbool Hussain, were also detained for allegedly giving Kabir safe haven. Kabir had bought nine cows, which the police confiscated. Because of the continuous political unrest in Bangladesh, there are now more security concerns surrounding this arrest. The Border Security Force (BSF) has been on high alert since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and fled last Monday. Nearly 600 Bangladeshis were prevented from entering India on Wednesday at the Dakshin Berubari village in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. Many in the group begged BSF officials to let them in, afraid for their life in the middle of the unrest in Bangladesh.
While some group members left, according to BSF sources, others stayed at the border point late into the night in the hopes of obtaining permission to cross. The people gathered at the border, according to a local, were in a desperate situation and talked about their upsetting experiences. Humayun Kabir, a cow smuggler of Bangladesh who was caught in Dhing after admitting to entering Meghalaya illegally through Dawki, was from Gayen Ghat in Sylhet. A Bangladeshi cell phone, two SIM cards, and questionable paperwork were taken by the police. Meanwhile after strict order from union home ministry, the Border Security Force (BSF) has sealed the Indo-Bangladesh border on the Northeastern side.
