In response to the escalating political unrest in Bangladesh, the Odisha Government has significantly increased coastal vigilance along its 480-kilometer coastline. The move aims to prevent unauthorised entry into India, particularly from individuals seeking to flee the volatile situation in the neighboring country.
The heightened security measures come after reports indicated that several criminals were released from jails during the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh. These elements are believed to be attempting to cross into India, raising serious security concerns for the state.
Speaking on the issue, Sanjay Kumar, the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), emphasised the state’s proactive steps to curb illegal infiltration. “In the past, individuals from Bangladesh have illegally entered Odisha using small boats. With the recent unrest in Bangladesh, many criminals have been released, and we suspect they may try to infiltrate India. Our top priority is to prevent such entries and ensure the safety and security of our coastline,” Kumar stated.
To address this potential threat, the state has deployed 18 marine police stations on high alert. The ADG of Coastal Security has opened a control room, and all available resources, including personnel, boats, and equipment, have been strategically positioned along the coast. The Odisha Police are working closely with the Indian Coast Guard and Navy to monitor and secure the coastline.
In addition to bolstering marine security, the state government has directed Superintendents of Police in coastal districts—particularly in Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Bhadrak—to intensify nighttime patrolling. Local authorities, including revenue inspectors and forest officials, have been instructed to keep a close watch on coastal villages for any suspicious activities.
A senior official from Kendrapara district administration explained, “The police and security agencies are working together to maintain a strong vigil on the coastlines. We have also directed our local officers to monitor the movement of people in villages near the coastline closely.”
In response to the evolving situation, Odisha’s Additional Chief Secretary (Home) recently convened a high-level meeting with all relevant stakeholders to discuss and strategise further actions to mitigate the risk of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. The meeting focused on strengthening existing security measures and ensuring a coordinated response to any potential threats.
“Our borders should not be utilised for anti-India and anti-Bangladesh activities. We are also closely monitoring social media and other communication channels to gather intelligence and stay ahead of any developments,” Sanjay Kumar added.
The political turmoil in Bangladesh has broader implications for India-Bangladesh relations, with Odisha’s efforts to secure its coastline reflecting the need to maintain peace and stability in the region. The state’s focus on preventing unauthorised entry is part of a larger strategy to ensure that the unrest in Bangladesh does not spill over into India.
