The Border Security Force (BSF), successfully prevented hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals from crossing into India at the international border in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. The attempt comes amid escalating violence and political turmoil in Bangladesh, which has resulted in a large number of people fleeing their homes.
According to a BSF official, the incident occurred near Dakshin Berubari village in the Jhaportala border outpost area. The individuals involved were from five villages in Bangladesh’s Panchagarh district, which borders Jalpaiguri. The Bangladeshi nationals, numbering between 120 and 140, gathered at various locations along the international border, hoping to enter Indian territory. However, they were unable to cross due to the border being fully sealed.
“They were later taken back by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB),” the BSF official stated. The gathered individuals recounted their distressing experiences to local residents, pleading to be let in. “But we are helpless. They recounted their horrific experiences,” said a local resident.
The situation in Bangladesh has become increasingly volatile following weeks of violent protests led by students over job quotas. These protests culminated in the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who subsequently fled the country. The unrest has resulted in over 300 deaths since June.
In the wake of the violence, Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved Parliament and appointed Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to lead an interim Government. Yunus, who was in Paris for the Olympics when he was appointed, appealed for calm and urged all parties to work together to rebuild the country. “Violence is our enemy. Please don’t create more enemies. Be calm and get ready to build the country,” Yunus stated.
The BSF field commanders quickly coordinated with their counterparts in the BGB, along with civil administration officials, to manage the situation at the border. The group, including women and children, was dispersed with the help of BGB, civil administration, and BSF personnel.
“A large group of Bangladeshi nationals gathered in patches at various locations at the International Border along North Bengal this evening,” an official said. “They were attempting to sneak into Indian territory. They were dispersed with the help of Border Guard Bangladesh, Civil Administration, and BSF personnel.”
The North Bengal Frontier of the BSF oversees a 932.39 km section of the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh international border, covering the West Bengal districts of Uttar Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar. The incident on August 7 highlights the ongoing challenges faced by border security forces in managing the influx of refugees amid political instability in neighboring countries.
