Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 4, 2024 said that his government will bring a new law in the state assembly session to increase the punishment in Love Jihad cases to life imprisonment.

“We will bring a new law in the state assembly where the punishment of Love Jihad will be increased to lifetime imprisonment,” CM Sarma said

In a series of posts on X, Assam CM said, “Assam government is bringing two laws to stop Land Jihad and Love Jihad… If a Muslim wants to buy a Hindu’s property or a Hindu wants to buy a Muslim’s property, he will have to get government permission… Those practising love jihad will be punished with life imprisonment…”

Earlier, Sarma directed the Assam Police to develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to investigate cases of “love jihad” cases. Sarma claimed that “love jihad” is a real and serious issue, involving forced conversions and deceitful romantic relationships.

Sarma has also announced that the Assam government will require the Chief Minister’s approval for interfaith land transfers between Hindus and Muslims. He also had expressed concerns about population control and the need to protect the interests of the indigenous population of Assam
“We will provide the rights of tea garden colony lands to the tea garden labourers. We will bring domicile policy for government jobs recruitment in next two months allowing only those born in Assam,” CM Sarma said while addressing the Assam State BJP executive meeting held at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati today.

He further said that in the last three years, his government has been doing work to protect Jati, Mati, and Bheti. “Riding on a national independence movement, Jawaharlal Nehru became the Prime Minister for the third term. At that time Congress received support from the people of the country just after the Independence. But Prime Minister Modi received grand support from the entire country and became the Prime Minister for a consecutive third term. Congress has celebrated after winning 99 seats. This is not out of 100, it is out of 542. 240 is bigger or 99. Maybe 99 is bigger in the mathematics of Pakistan,” he added.

The Assam CM further said that in Assam, the old party (Congress) won only three seats, but NDA won 11 seats but they created an environment that they won the Everest.

“People of Assam have been receiving good news under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Congress had the opportunity to give recognition of Charaideo Maidam as a World Heritage site, but they didn’t. But under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Charaideo Maidam has been recognized as a World Heritage Site. Assam has been able to create a new history. Assam has now become front ranking state,” he said.

Himanta Biswa Sarma also emphasised that the BJP will come to power in Assam in 2026 and no one can stop it.

“BJP is in the hearts of the people of the state. We extend our gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who always thinks and does for Assam. Bye-elections for five assembly constituencies will be held and I hope that we will win at least 4 out of 5 seats. In the last 3 years we have been doing work for the development of Assam, Jati, Mati, and Bheti,” he said.

“During the Congress regime, 30 per cent of a special community was recruited in the police department. When we will complete one lakh jobs recruitment we will publish all data. Only eight people have applied under CAA in Assam. We are going to decide to provide biometrics to nine lakh people who are yet to get NRC biometrics. Congress’s history is appeasement, Kalank,” the Assam Chief Minister said. (With Inputs From ANI)
