Imphal: In the last five years, over 10,000 illegal immigrants have been detected in Manipur, according to information released by Chief Minister N Biren Singh. This was said in answer to a question posed by Congress MLA Okram Surjakumar Singh during the 6th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly. CM Biren Singh made this statement in response to an MLA’s query. The CM also informed the house that throughout the previous five years, 10,675 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, China, Myanmar, Norway, and Nepal had been identified.
Imphal West-11, Imphal East-1, Bishnupur-1, Thoubal-1, Kakching-6, Churachandpur-150, Chandel-1,895, Tengnoupal-2,406, Ukhrul-3, Kangpokpi-2, and Kamjong-6,199 are the districts with the highest concentration of illegal immigrants, according to the information provided. He added that about 85 undocumented immigrants had been deported. There are about 143 immigrants housed in the holding facility. The upkeep of the detainees at the centre has cost the state government Rs 85.55 lakh. The CM also stated that a committee was established in response to an order from the government dated March 24 of last year, which directed the creation of a verification drive aimed at identifying undocumented immigrants in the districts of Churachandpur, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Kamjong, and Pherzawl. Prior to the crisis, the committee had identified 2,480 undocumented immigrants from Myanmar.
The Indo-Myanmar border fence has been announced by the central government. Work on border barriers has already begun. According to CM Singh, border fencing between border pillars 79 and 81 has been finished for a total length of 9.214 kilometres. He went on to say that 120 km of border fencing in Manipur has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs. An 80-kilometre plan has been filed to the relevant ministry. For a distance of 21.86 kilometres, physical work has started after approval, according to CM Singh.
Additionally, the Center has given the state administration instructions to complete the fence-building segments needed to span the entire length of the border in Manipur. Speaking about the measures implemented by state authorities, he stated that district police are keeping an eye on the influx of undocumented immigrants by conducting mobile frisking and spot checks in high-risk locations. Thirty-four police outposts and six police stations are being established in the state’s border regions. The chief minister stated that in order to control and monitor illegal immigration in the border district, the state government designated civil and police nodal officers in five border districts.
