The Ramayana Masam is a month-long celebration observed in Kerala during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam. This year, Ramayana Masam 2024 commenced on July 16 and will conclude on August 16.
Ramayana Masam: How is it celebrated
The Ramayana, one of the greatest Hindu epics, is recited with utmost devotion by devotees throughout the month. The recitation is timed to conclude on the final day of Karkidaka Masam. Apart from homes, Ramayana recitals also take place in Bhagwan Vishnu’s temples.
During this month, Hindu pilgrims embark on ‘Nalambala Darshanam’, visiting the four temples dedicated to Bhagwan Ram, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna situated in Kottayam and Thrissur districts. Typically, the pilgrimage is completed within a single day. The Amavasya of the Karkidaka Masam is known for the ritualistic homage performed for one’s deceased family members to ensure their attainment of peace. Additionally, since the month of Karkidakam is considered to be a lean month, conducting auspicious ceremonies like marriages, housewarming, or the beginning of new ventures is not considered.
Another highlight is the specific Ayurvedic treatments practised during this time. Many people consume Karkidaka Kanji, a gruel mixed with herbs and medicines, for its health benefits.

Sabarimala Temple Opens for Karkidakam Pooja. The Sabarimala temple in Kerala commenced its five-day monthly pooja on Monday, marking the Malayalam month of Karkidakam. There were no evening rituals as part of the holy observance.
Reports mention that only those individuals who possess virtual QR passes would be allowed for ‘darshan’ or the ‘holy visit’. Special rituals, including ‘kalabhabhishekam’, ‘laksharchana’, and ‘sahasrakalasam’, will also be performed at the temple during the pooja days. Several other rituals, including ‘Udayasthamana pooja’, ‘ashtabhishekam’, ‘pushpabhishekam’, and ‘padi pooja’, will also be held.
