During India’s T-20 World Cup celebration, a seemingly ordinary man with Tilak on his forehead caught the attention of viewers worldwide. This man, hailing from Karnataka, holds a unique and crucial role in Indian cricket — Raghavendra Dwivedi, affectionately known as Raghu.

Raghu’s journey to becoming Team India’s Throwdown Specialist is one of unwavering determination. Born in Kumta, Uttara Kannada district, cricket was always Raghu’s passion. Faced with a choice between cricket and family expectations, Raghu chose his passion and left home with just Rs 21 in his pocket.

His early days were full of struggle; he spent nights at bus stands and temples in Hubli before finding an unlikely stay in a nearby cemetery, where he made his home for over four years. With the passage of time, Raghu honed his cricket skills, started assisting players in Hubli, and later moved to Bangalore on the advice of a friend.

In Bangalore, Raghu’s talent did not go unnoticed. His dedication caught the eye of Tilak Naidu, a former Karnataka State cricketer and current Under-19 selection committee head, who introduced him to veteran cricketer Jawagal Srinath, another cricketing stalwart from Karnataka. This meeting proved to be full of fortune for Raghu as Srinath invited him to join the Karnataka Ranji team, where he started assisting the cricket players during practice sessions and at the National Cricket Academy.

Raghu’s hard work and commitment eventually led to him completing the BCCI level-1 coaching course at the NCA, solidifying his reputation as a skilled coach and throwdown expert. His breakthrough came in 2011 when Sachin Tendulkar recognised his talent and appointed him as a training assistant for the Indian cricket team. Tendulkar’s support further boosted Raghu’s career, establishing him as an integral part of the team’s coaching staff.

Since then, Raghu has played a pivotal role in the success of Indian cricket, particularly noted for his exceptional throwdown skills. Players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have credited Raghu with enhancing their batting prowess through rigorous training sessions. Kohli once remarked, “facing Raghu’s deliveries in practice makes match-day bowling seem easier.”

Raghu’s journey serves as an inspiring testament to perseverance and passion in the face of adversity. From humble beginnings to becoming an integral part of Team India, his story resonates with anyone striving to achieve their dreams against all odds. As India celebrated its T-20 World Cup victory, Raghu’s tireless dedication behind the scenes was finally recognised on a global stage, marking the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice.
