On the night of Thursday, June 20, a frenzied Islamist mob lynched a man in the Madyan area of Swat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, after accusing him of desecrating the Quran. The victim, identified as a tourist from Sialkot district in Punjab province, faced the mob’s wrath following allegations that he had set fire to pages of the Quran.
According to reports, the local police initially took the accused into custody to prevent any violence.
However, a mob charged the police station, forcibly dragged the victim out, and subsequently lynched him. Swat District Police Officer (DPO) Dr. Zahidullah Khan informed Dawn that the mob also set the police station and a police vehicle on fire, injuring eight officers in the process.
The mob’s brutal actions culminated in the lynching and burning of the victim’s body. A video of the incident circulated widely on social media, sparking outrage.
In the aftermath, a heavy police was deployed to the Madyan area to restore order. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur took immediate notice of the incident, appealing for calm and ordering a thorough investigation. He directed DPO Dr. Zahidullah Khan to take swift measures to control the situation and requested a detailed report on the incident.
Notably, the victim tourist came to Swat for Eid celebrations and got killed by co-religiousnists. His identity is yet to be revealed.
This violent episode in Swat echoes a similar incident last month in Punjab’s Sargodha district, where a Christian man, Nazir Masih, was lynched over dubious allegations of blasphemy. In that case, a mob attacked Masih’s home, destroyed his belongings, and set his factory on fire. The violence was triggered by rumors that Masih had intentionally burned pages of the Quran, although it later emerged that he had accidentally included a box of holy text pages in the debris he was burning after a storm.
Nazir Masih’s nephew, Tariq Sajid, told Swarajya that his uncle was merely trying to clean the street after the storm when the incident occurred. Sajid believes that a jealous neighbor falsely accused Masih, leading to the tragic outcome.
These incidents highlight the severe consequences of blasphemy allegations in Pakistan, where mob violence often precedes legal processes, endangering religious minorities and undermining the rule of law. Authorities are under increasing pressure to address these issues and ensure the protection of all citizens, irrespective of their religious beliefs.
