Respiratory diseases are common ailments that affect millions of people worldwide. While modern medicine offers various treatments, Ayurveda, an ancient holistic healing system, provides natural and effective remedies for managing these conditions. Ayurvedic treatments focus on cleansing the body of toxins, balancing doshas, and using potent herbs to improve respiratory health.

Purification Therapies in Ayurveda

The purification therapies in Ayurveda play a crucial role in maintaining respiratory health. These therapies help cleanse the body by efficiently removing toxins and improving digestive fire. This process helps manage the vitiated Vata and Kapha doshas, which are often linked to respiratory disorders. Proper management of these doshas not only addresses respiratory ailments directly but also ensures a balanced digestive system, which is the physical root of many disorders.

Herbs that help improve Respiratory Health

Ayurveda has long recognised the importance of herbs in treating respiratory conditions. The lungs, which are constantly filtering air and protecting the body from environmental pollutants, can benefit greatly from these natural remedies.

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

Mullein’s essential oil, extracted from its leaves and flowers, is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. This oil is highly effective in treating colds, coughs, and chronic conditions like asthma and bronchitis.

Plantain Leaf (Plantago spp.)

Plantain leaf is traditionally used to relieve severe itchiness and irritation caused by bug bites and bee stings. However, it is also beneficial in treating respiratory diseases. It is commonly used in the form of decoction and incense to alleviate respiratory symptoms.

Long Pepper (Piper longum)

Long pepper is a highly effective home remedy for managing severe respiratory issues such as colds, coughs, difficulty breathing, and blocked nasal cavities. It is often prescribed by doctors for its potent healing properties.

Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata)

The root and leaves of Kalmegh are known for their high medicinal value. With anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant characteristics, this herb boosts the immune system and provides relief from nasal congestion, flu, and fever when used under proper guidance.

Vasaka (Justicia adhatoda)

As part of Asthma Ayurvedic treatment, the leaf of the Malabar nut is highly recommended. Vasaka stimulates the bronchial system, helping to eliminate excess phlegm from the throat and clear the lungs. It is an excellent herb for balancing Kapha Dosha and promoting respiratory health.

Talisa (Abies Webbiana)

Traditionally known as “Indian Silver,” Talisa is an effective immunity booster and supports healthy respiration. Its use in Ayurveda has been extensive due to its potent health benefits.
