Imphal: In a significant operation, alert and vigilant soldiers of the Indian Army successfully averted potential tragedies by defusing three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Manipur’s Imphal East district. The IEDs were discovered on the road connecting Nongdam and Etham Tangkhul villages, near the Maphou Dam, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region.

Discovery and Action
The IEDs were found concealed along a 46-kilometre stretch of road linking Nongdam and Itham villages. The section of the road where the explosives were discovered is closer to Maphou Dam and Nongdam village. According to a defence spokesperson, “During a routine area-domination and surveillance operation, army personnel noticed the three IEDs placed, in tandem, along the road. Army columns acted swiftly and cordoned off the area.”

Upon securing the area, a bomb disposal squad was promptly deployed to the scene. The squad successfully defused the IEDs, preventing potential casualties and injuries to the local population. “Subsequently, a bomb disposal squad arrived at the location and defused the IEDs safely, preventing potential loss of life and injury to locals,” the spokesperson added.

Details of the IEDs
The defused IEDs included two bombs weighing 2 kilogrammes each and another weighing 5 kilogrammes. The bomb squad also recovered cordtex, electronic detonators, and a command mechanism from the site, indicating the sophisticated nature of the explosives.

Recent Violent Incidents
This operation comes on the heels of a recent bombing by suspected Kuki militants, who targeted a vital bridge on the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway. The attack occurred at midnight on April 23, aiming to disrupt communications and the transportation of essential goods to the capital, Imphal, from the rest of the country. The bridge, located on National Highway 2 and passing through Koubru Leikha, Sapormeina villages, and Kangpokpi district, was damaged in the explosion, causing significant disruption.

Ongoing Ethnic Tensions
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence, with tensions persisting a year after clashes erupted between the valley-dominant Meiteis and the hill-dominant Kuki tribes. These ethnic conflicts have significantly impacted the region’s stability, prompting increased vigilance and security measures by the Indian Army and other security forces.

The security forces maintain a continuous watch over sensitive areas, particularly near the foothills surrounding the state capital Imphal Valley, where villages of the two communities meet. This heightened security is crucial in preventing further violence and ensuring the safety of the local populace. The successful defusing of three IEDs by the Indian Army in Imphal East district underscores the ongoing security challenges in Manipur and the critical role of vigilant and proactive military operations in maintaining peace and stability. The army’s swift action prevented potential loss of life and injury, reflecting their dedication to safeguarding the region.

As Manipur continues to navigate its way through ethnic tensions and security threats, the vigilance of the Indian Army and other security forces remains vital in ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. The defusing of these IEDs is a testament to their commitment and the importance of maintaining a robust security presence in the region.
