The CPI-M in Kerala is in a tight spot after the construction of a memorial for two of its party workers who were killed in a blast while making bombs at Chettakkandy near Panoor in the Kannur district.
The memorial is built for CPM workers Shaiju and Subish. They were killed on June 6, 2015, while they were engaged in country bomb-making. The incident took place on the top of a hill in a secluded place. Four senior workers were seriously injured in the incident. Reports suggest that the memorial has been built at AKG Nagar, Chettakkandy, Kannur district. Money was raised by public collection. Kerala CPI(M) Secretary MV Govindan plans to inaugurate the memorial on May 22.
Interestingly, when both CPM workers died in 2015, the Party rejected them. The then state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had said that those who were killed had nothing to do with his Party. But, despite Kodiyeri’s assertion, Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan was very active during their funeral.
One CPM man, Sheril, was killed, and three others were injured during a blast in Panoor during an alleged bomb-making. CPM state secretary immediately came out with a statement that they had nothing to do with the bomb makers. The incident took place on April 5. Those days, there were allegations that CPM was making bombs to launch anarchy during the parliament elections. However, some local CPM members had visited the house of the deceased. Naturally, BJP and the Congress-led opposition United Democratic Front criticised the CPM stand sharply. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Congress leader and former Home Minister said that CPM is the Party of hypocrisy. They say something and keep on doing something else. First, they say the killed man has nothing to do with them. Later on, they convert the killed into martyrs. The incidents once again prove that CPM is a party of hypocrisy.
Meanwhile, CPM leader P Jayarajan justified the memorials for the men killed during bomb-making. He said this in his social media post. He said martyrs are always martyrs. Jayarajan said his Party would go ahead with the programme. He says history cannot be rejected. If someone attempts to do it, history will not forgive him.
But, Jayarajan says in this post that however the Panoor blast (of April 2024) would not be included in the martyrs’ list. But no one takes his reference to the Panoor blast seriously. Because CPM always flaunts hypocrisy hence, they can change their stand any time they think fit. It is to be remembered that CPM state secretary M V Govindan told the media that the three DYFI men arrested in connection with the Panoor blasts went there for a ‘life saving mission’.

Amidst mounting criticism, the CPM’s justification remains unclear, leaving many sceptical of their intentions and principles.
