Guwahati: In a significant operation against the drug network, Cachar police in Assam seized 10.333kg of heroin that was being transported from a neighbouring state. This substantial haul highlights the ongoing efforts of the Assam police to curb the drug menace in the region.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the police’s efforts on his social media handle, stating, “In a major crackdown on the drugs network, @cacharpolice conducted a special operation and confiscated 10.333kg heroin transported from a neighbouring State. Imagine the countless lives saved through this seizure. We are committed to working 24/7 to ensure our youths do not fall into this trap. Good job @assampolice.”
Previous Major Drug Seizures in Assam
Earlier, on April 4, acting on a tip-off, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam police intercepted a vehicle near Sahidpur under Silchar police station in Cachar district. The operation led to the seizure of over 20 kg of heroin valued at a staggering ₹210 crore. The vehicle, driven by a man named Laldinuwa, began its journey in Aizawl and concealed the drugs under containers of bread and biscuits. The driver was arrested, and further investigations are underway.
Joint Operation Yields Significant Marijuana Seizure
In another major operation, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Customs Department, seized 406 kg of marijuana worth ₹1.86 crore from a forested area in Sepahijala district in Tripura. Based on specific intelligence about the large quantity of marijuana hidden in the Neuramura Taibandal forest, the joint operation was successfully executed on May 19. The seized consignment was handed over to the Customs Department in Agartala for further legal action.
A press release from Assam Rifles detailed the operation: “A joint operation was launched by Assam Rifles and Customs Department, resulting in the recovery of 406 kgs marijuana worth Rs 1.86 Crore. The seized consignment was handed over to the Customs Department of Agartala on May 19, 2024, for further legal proceedings.”
