A shocking incident has been reported from Kozhikode Medical College in Kerala. A surgery was mistakenly performed on the tongue of a four-year-old girl who had been admitted for surgery on her finger. After committing the blunder, the hospital authorities offered the excuse that the girl had some problems with her tongue, necessitating the surgery. However, her relatives do not accept this explanation.
The girl was admitted for the amputation of her sixth finger. However, after the surgery, her sixth finger remained when she was brought back. Additionally, her parents discovered cotton in her mouth, prompting further examination that revealed the doctors had mistakenly operated on her tongue.
Despite initial attempts by authorities to attribute the surgery to issues with the girl’s tongue, the doctors later apologised to the parents. The Medical College superintendent reportedly stated that the Principal would conduct an inquiry.
Health Minister Veena George has requested a report from the Director of Medical Education. Meanwhile, the concerned surgeon, an Associate Professor, has been suspended, and the police have registered a case under IPC 336 and IPC 337 against the doctor. The Kerala Child Rights Commission has also sought reports from the hospital authorities. These actions are the result of the persistent efforts of the parents.
BJP state president K Surendran demanded that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan explain the events at Kozhikode Medical College and called for the immediate resignation of Veena George.
Kozhikode Medical College has been in the news for over a year due to unfortunate incidents. For instance, Harshina underwent a cesarean surgery for delivery, only to later experience severe stomach pain.

Subsequent examinations revealed that a pair of scissors had been left inside her stomach after the surgery. When she staged a sit-in at the police station, an investigation was initiated. Harshina continues her protest, vowing to persist until she receives justice. These regrettable incidents persist despite Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Health Minister Veena George, and the entire ruling CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) asserting Kerala’s status as a leader in healthcare.
