Obituary: Historic figure in Tamil Nadu politics Velayutham, who was South India’s first BJP MLA, passes away

C. Velayutham, a dedicated social worker and the first BJP MLA in South India, passed away in the early hours of today at the age of 73. Velayutham made history by winning the Padmanabhapuram assembly constituency in the 1996 Tamil Nadu state elections, becoming the first BJP member to be elected to the state assembly in South India. He defeated DMK’s Bala Janathipathy in a landmark victory.

Although the BJP secured only one seat in the 1996 elections, Velayutham’s victory marked a significant milestone for the party’s presence in Tamil Nadu. Despite subsequent polls seeing the BJP secure the second and third positions in 2001 and 2006, respectively, Velayutham’s pioneering achievement remained noteworthy in the state’s political landscape.

Prior to his electoral success, Velayutham served as an independent member of the Tamil Nadu assembly in 1984. He continued his social activities after his term and remained committed to serving the community. A devout Swayamsevak since the age of 13, Velayutham’s dedication to social work and his association with the Hindu Munnani were prominent aspects of his life.

In the aftermath of the Mandaikadu clashes, Velayutham joined the Hindu Munnani and contested the 1989 assembly polls, representing the Hindu minority community. Despite facing challenges, including financial constraints, Velayutham’s determination led him to sell a portion of his agricultural land to fund his election campaign. His perseverance paid off when he secured victory in the 1996 elections.

Expressing condolences over Velayutham’s demise, BJP National President JP Nadda acknowledged his significant contributions to both the party and society. In a post on social media platform X, Nadda praised Velayutham’s commitment and dedication, highlighting his pivotal role in advancing BJP politics in Tamil Nadu.

Similarly, K Annamalai, the state chief of BJP and party’s Coimbatore candidate, remembered Velayutham as a principled and hardworking individual who played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the BJP’s growth in Tamil Nadu. Annamalai conveyed his deepest condolences to Velayutham’s family and supporters, recognizing his enduring legacy and contributions to the party.
