Sanskrit, one of the ancient languages holds a significant place in the cultural heritage of both India and Nepal. Recognising the importance of preserving and promoting Sanskrit education, India and Nepal have embarked on a collaborative journey. During the three-day Nepal-India International Sanskrit Conclave, both Indian and Nepalese scholars have decided to hold an International Sanskrit Conference annually.
Over 120 Sanskrit scholars, professors, and Government officials from both nations were part of this significant gathering which was orchestrated by Niti Anusandhan Pratisthan in collaboration with Central Sanskrit University, Delhi, and India Foundation, Delhi. The primary aim of the conference was to fortify Nepal-India relations and advance Sanskrit education.
Signalling a commitment to several collaborative endeavours, the five-point resolution has been adopted during the three-day meeting. Five Major Pointers of the Resolution –

Amongst these resolutions, one of them is a pledge to support the development of gurukuls in Nepal through collaboration with Maharshi Sandipani Veda Vidya Pratisthan, Ujjain, India. This collaborative effort aims to revitalise traditional educational systems along with promoting Sanskrit learning within Nepal.
Along with this, emphasis was made on establishing the Nepal-India Sanskrit Study Centre, for which Niti Anusandhan Pratisthan Nepal has been designated as the headquarters. This centre will focus on facilitating joint research initiatives, publish Sanskrit scriptures from both nations, and undertake the study of Sanskrit manuscripts which are discovered in Nepal.
It is important to preserve and explore the vast reservoir of unpublished Sanskrit manuscripts under the care of Nepal’s Department of Archaeology with approximate number being around five lakhs.
Another resolution focuses on organising training programs in India for Nepali Sanskrit students. These programs will aim to improve and enhance the linguistic proficiency and academic capabilities of students who study Sanskrit in Nepal, thereby strengthening bilateral educational ties. For this, the Central Sanskrit University, Delhi, has pledged to support Nepalese Gurukul libraries along with providing essential study material (books) to Sanskrit educational institutions in Nepal.
Lastly, a resolution was passed to promote the rich religious, cultural, philosophical, historical, and archaeological heritage of both, Nepal and India. Emphasis was also made on the preservation and promotion of Sanskrit, Pali, and Prakrit languages.
Historical Context:
Sanskrit, often referred to as the “language of the Gods,” has origins that can be traced back to the ancient Indus Valley civilisation, where it evolved as a refined language of literature, religious texts as well as philosophical discourse. Over time, Sanskrit language has flourished as the lingua franca of scholars, poets, and philosophers across South Asia.
In both India and Nepal, Sanskrit serves as a repository of knowledge. However, despite its ancient lineage, Sanskrit has faced challenges in modern times, with declining interest among younger generations and a diminishing presence in mainstream education.
This collaboration between India and Nepal will help foster Sanskrit education. By revitalising the study of Sanskrit, both nations not only want to preserve their cultural heritage, but promote academic excellence, and nurture a sense of pride in their linguistic legacy. Sanskrit is not merely a language; it is a gateway to a treasure trove of ancient wisdom that emcopasses literature, philosophy, and scientific knowledge.
Furthermore, India and Nepal are working together to develop textbooks along with digital resources for Sanskrit education. These collaborative efforts aim to make Sanskrit learning more accessible, and relevant to modern day learners. By reviving the interest of learners in Sanskrit, this partnership will strengthen cultural ties, mutual respect, and increase the understanding between the two nations.
