Guwahati: In a significant move poised to reshape Assam’s transportation landscape and bolster its tourism sector, the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has approved a whopping ₹645 crores for the development of 10 waterways projects along the iconic Brahmaputra river. Under the ambitious Sagarmala programme, these projects are set to receive 100 per cent funding from the central government, reflecting a strong commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth in the region.

Led by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the initiatives aim to leverage the immense potential of the Brahmaputra to establish new avenues for economic prosperity and tourism development. With a strategic focus on enhancing riverine infrastructure and terminals, these projects are poised to transform Assam’s waterways into bustling hubs of activity, facilitating seamless transportation and unlocking the region’s tourism potential.

The allocation of funds for slipway construction at strategic locations such as Dhubri and Majuli, along with the establishment of passenger terminals in key districts like North Lakhimpur and Barpeta, underscores the government’s comprehensive approach to enhancing connectivity across Assam. These strategic investments are expected to not only improve transportation efficiency but also stimulate industrial development and trade in the region, paving the way for sustained economic growth.

Minister Sonowal emphasised the transformative impact of these projects, highlighting their role in harnessing the Brahmaputra’s resources to develop alternative, environmentally sound transportation modes. With a focus on promoting river tourism and water sports, the government plans to construct seven tourist jetties along the Brahmaputra, enhancing the region’s appeal as a tourist destination and driving economic activity in the tourism sector.

The investment in port infrastructure expansion and mega ports, coupled with efforts to increase the share of Inland Water Transport (IWT) to 5 per cent by 2030 under the Maritime India Vision (MIV), presents significant opportunities for keyword optimization. Key phrases such as “Brahmaputra waterways development,” “Assam transportation infrastructure,” and “river tourism in Northeast India” can be strategically incorporated throughout the article to improve search engine visibility and attract relevant traffic.

Additionally, the development of an Eastern Grid along the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, alongside the Ganga and Sundarbans, holds immense potential for regional integration and trade with South Asia and Eastern South Asia. By unlocking the multilateral trade potential of $49 billion dollars, these projects are poised to position Assam as a key player in the global maritime economy, further enhancing its economic competitiveness on the international stage.

Noteworthy achievements in waterway development, such as the increase in cargo handled via the Indo Bangladesh Protocol route (IBPR) and the establishment of the first Ship Repair facility in the Northeast region, underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing maritime infrastructure in the region. These accomplishments, coupled with ongoing projects aimed at comprehensive development and last-mile connectivity, highlight the government’s proactive approach to infrastructure development in the Northeast.

Looking ahead, transformative projects such as the construction of tourist jetties, deployment of Electric Catamarans, provision of passenger vessels, and dredging operations present ample opportunities for keyword optimization and search engine visibility. In conclusion, the government’s bold investment in Brahmaputra waterways projects represents a significant milestone in Assam’s journey towards economic prosperity and regional connectivity. Through strategic planning and robust infrastructure development, these initiatives are set to unlock new opportunities for trade, tourism, and industrial development, positioning Assam as a key player in India’s maritime economy. As the projects unfold, they are poised to leave a lasting impact on the region, ushering in a new era of growth and development for the people of Assam and the Northeast as a whole.
