In a startling turn of events, a 31-year-old employee at Mumbai’s renowned Mazagaon Dockyard has been taken into custody under the Official Secrets Act by the Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) on charges of engaging in espionage/ spying activities. The arrest was done after an extensive investigation, which revealed that confidential information was shared with an intelligence agency in Pakistan.

The Maharashtra ATS, known for its commitment to national security, uncovered the spying activities during a thorough inquiry. The accused, Kalpesh Baikar, who is employed as a structural fabricator at the dockyard, has been reportedly involved in secretive dealings that could compromise critical information related to the dockyard’s operations and national security as a whole. As per the statement released by ATS, the suspect was introduced to a Pakistan based intelligence operative (PIO) through Facebook and WhatsApp between November 2021 and May 2023.

The employee in question is a trusted member of the Mazagaon Dockyard and was taken into custody after full evidence suggested his involvement in sharing sensitive information with an intelligence operative based in Pakistan. However, the nature of the information that has been exchanged till now also remains undisclosed to protect ongoing security concerns.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the maritime community in Mumbai and raised questions about the vulnerability of sensitive defence installations. The Mazagaon Dockyard is a key player in India’s naval capabilities and is also known for its strategic importance in shipbuilding and defence services.
