Imphal, Manipur: A rapid and coordinated response by security forces culminated in the successful rescue of Naib Subedar Konsam Kheda Singh, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army, who was abducted from his residence in Charangpat Mamang Leikai, Thoubal district, Manipur.
The abduction unfolded early in the morning on March 8, when a group of unidentified gunmen forcibly took JCO Kheda Singh, who was on leave at the time. Swift action ensued as security agencies, including the Army, launched an extensive search operation to locate and rescue the abducted officer.
Collaborating with other security agencies, army columns stationed nearby conducted a joint search operation. This synergized effort proved successful, leading to the safe rescue of JCO Kheda Singh at 6:30 PM on the same day. Currently under the custody of Waikhong Police Station near Kakching in Thoubal district, Manipur Police is actively investigating the incident.
A statement released by Indian Army stated, “Army columns launched a coordinated joint search operation, by the security agencies to rescue the JCO.The synergized efforts of the security forces resulted in the JCO being safely rescued at 6:30 PM on March 8, 2024. The JCO is currently at Waikhong Police Station (near Kakching) in Thoubal district. Manipur Police is investigating the incident.”
While the rescue operation was triumphant, the motive behind the abduction remains shrouded in mystery. The Indian Army’s statement, while acknowledging the successful rescue, provided no insights into the reasons behind the targeted abduction.
This incident echoes a similar occurrence on September 16, 2023 when an Indian Army jawan, Serto Thangthang Kom, faced abduction and tragic demise while on leave in Manipur. The jawan, a member of the Defence Service Corps stationed at Leimakhong in Kangpokpi, was forcibly taken away by three miscreants in a white vehicle. The lifeless body of the 41-year-old soldier was discovered the next morning at Khuningthek Village East of Mongjam.
The recent successful rescue operation of JCO Kheda Singh not only brings relief but emphasises the unwavering commitment of security forces to safeguard the lives of military personnel. As investigations unfold, the local community remains on edge, yearning for clarity on the motives behind these distressing incidents.
