Facing intense scrutiny and pressure from various quarters, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), an ally of the DMK, has finally expelled Mohammed Saleem, brother of the alleged drug mastermind Jaffar Sadiq, from the party. This move comes after persistent demands and mounting criticism, including purported pressure from the DMK to take decisive action.

The unfolding saga of synthetic drug activities in Tamil Nadu, coupled with the alleged involvement of international drug lord Jaffar Sadiq, has sent shockwaves through the state. As the days pass, additional incriminating evidence surfaces, revealing the drug lord’s connections and influence within the DMK’s first family and the Kollywood industry.

Jaffar Sadiq, currently on the run, has reportedly found an ally in his brother, Mohammed Saleem, who held significant positions as Zonal Deputy Secretary in Central Chennai within the VCK. Despite the arrest of three individuals in Delhi with contraband worth Rs. 2000 crores and the subsequent removal of Jaffar Sadiq from the DMK, VCK initially hesitated to take official action, drawing criticism from various quarters.

It is alleged that Jaffar Sadiq and Mohammed Saleem played pivotal roles in orchestrating illicit drug activities, including the illegal export of Ketamine. Jaffar Sadiq is accused of being a key figure in the smuggling of 38.687 kg of Ketamine to Malaysia. Ahmed Mushraf, an employee of the duo, provided a statement revealing his active involvement in Cube Impex, a company formed by Jaffar Sadiq and Mohammed Saleem for illegal drug exports. The revelations also suggest the use of fake ID proof documents under the name of Abdul Raheem Jinnah.

The investigation, initiated following the interception of a Ketamine consignment on 30 October 2018, has shed light on their alleged involvement in utilizing firms like Cube Impex and Hitech Traders for illicit activities.

The consignment, initially declared as “Bangles,” was intercepted at the Air Cargo Complex in Mumbai, where 38.687 kgs. of Ketamine were discovered. While Mohamed Saleem was arrested on 23 February 2019, Jaffar Sadiq remains absconding, with arrest warrants issued against others involved in the conspiracy.

Probe findings suggest Jaffar Sadiq’s active participation in arranging the shipment through PYC Logistics and his role in attempting to smuggle Ketamine to Malaysia, leading to the consignment’s interception. Despite mounting allegations and evidence, VCK party chief Thirumavalavan did not exhibit any inclination to launch an investigation into the allegations against Mohamed Saleem during a recent press conference.

Responding to reporters’ queries regarding Annamalai’s statement alleging Mohamed Saleem’s prominent position in VCK, Thirumavalavan stated that there is no mention of Saleem in the FIR. However, he asserted that the party would investigate the allegations if necessary.

Saleem’s posts on his official handle showcased his pride in his influence within the political party and his meetings with high-profile personalities. However, following widespread demands for action against him, VCK issued a press release stating that Saleem’s actions were harming the party’s reputation.

The move to expel Saleem from the party comes amidst a broader political landscape, where the issue of drug mafia and illicit activities has gained significant attention. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a recent visit to Chennai, assured vigorous action against the drug mafia, signalling a crackdown on such criminal activities. Additionally, BJP leader Annamalai highlighted earlier cases against Jaffer Sadiq, further emphasising the seriousness of the drug issue.

As the Lok Sabha elections draw near, the drug issue is expected to have repercussions for the DMK, with political parties vowing to address the issue and hold accountable those involved in criminal activities. The expulsion of Saleem from VCK underscores the party’s commitment to maintaining its reputation and integrity amidst growing concerns over illicit activities and their impact on politics.
