In a groundbreaking achievement, India has launched its first indigenously built hydrogen-powered boat, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts towards sustainable maritime transportation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the historic event during a ceremony held in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, with live proceedings broadcasted from the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) on February 28.

The launch of the hydrogen-powered boat is a crucial component of the Indian government’s ambitious initiative to combat greenhouse gas emissions and promote environmentally friendly maritime fuel alternatives. By adopting hydrogen as an effective fuel source, the nation aims to reduce pollution and contribute to global efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Developed through extensive research conducted by CSL, the hydrogen-powered boat represents a major technological advancement in the field of maritime transportation. The project received full funding from CSL, showcasing India’s capability to innovate and lead in sustainable technologies.

Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi hailed the launch as a significant leap forward for the country’s transportation sector. He emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts across various transportation domains, including road, water, and air transport, in driving India towards new horizons of development.

CSL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Madhu S. Nair, expressed optimism about the boat’s potential to propel India towards becoming a global economic powerhouse. He announced plans to deploy the boat in Varanasi after a month, where it will serve river traffic needs. Additionally, CSL has committed to building fifteen more hydrogen-powered boats, with an agreement already in place with the Inland Waterways Authority of India for their deployment in various locations across the country.

The hydrogen-powered boat, measuring 45 meters in length and capable of accommodating 50 passengers, boasts air-conditioned interiors and emission-free operation. Developed at a cost of Rs 18 crore, with 70 per cent of the funding provided by the Department of Shipping, the boat features cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell technology developed by KPIT Technologies.

Officials from CSL highlighted the boat’s significance in advancing India’s National Green Mission objectives and positioning the country as a leader in eco-friendly maritime transportation. The deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the maritime sector not only enhances efficiency but also aligns with India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

At present, countries like the US, Japan, and China dominate the hydrogen-powered maritime sector. India’s entry into this arena signifies its commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship on a global scale.

The successful launch of the hydrogen-powered boat underscores India’s potential to revolutionise the maritime industry with innovative, eco-friendly solutions. As the nation continues its journey towards a greener future, initiatives like this serve as shining examples of India’s commitment to sustainable growth and environmental preservation.
