Manipur Violence: “219 lives lost, 10,000 FIRs, 1.5 lakh detained; steps taken to restore peace,” says Governor Uikey

Imphal: Manipur, has been marred by persistent violence since May 3, 2023, resulting in a tragic loss of 219 lives, as revealed by Governor Anusuiya Uikey during her address at the opening day of the budget session of the Manipur assembly.

Governor Uikey, in her comprehensive address to the legislators during the 5th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, shed light on the significant progress and development achieved amidst the challenging law and order crisis over the past year. Emphasising the government’s relentless efforts to address complex issues stemming from the ongoing violence, she expressed deep condolences for the unfortunate loss of lives.

In response to the crisis, the government has undertaken substantial measures to maintain law and order. Notably, 198 companies of central armed police force and 140 army columns have been deployed to assist state security forces. Additionally, over 187,000 individuals were temporarily detained under preventive measures, with legal formalities followed for their release. Approximately 10,000 FIRs have been registered, and investigations have been handed over to agencies like CBI and NIA for transparency.

Governor Uikey underscored the government’s commitment to protecting religious sites and properties of displaced persons. Coordinated security coverage has been implemented at vulnerable locations to prevent further destruction or encroachment. Ongoing efforts are being made to resettle displaced people, with a focus on the welfare of both hill and valley residents.

Highlighting the economic impact of the crisis, the Governor lamented that the fiscal year 2023-2024 has proven challenging for Manipur. The unrest has taken a toll on the state’s economy, with an estimated loss of fiscal resources amounting to Rs 800 crore. This has significantly affected the budgeted resource availability for the state.

Despite these challenges, Governor Uikey shared positive developments in various sectors. Initiatives in healthcare, Tribal and SC/OBC Welfare, education, food security, power sector, agriculture, natural resources, water resources, and management have been actively pursued. These projects aim to contribute to the overall well-being and progress of Manipur.

In concluding her address, Governor Anusuiya Uikey urged the people of Manipur to extend their support and cooperation to restore peace and harmony. She emphasised the collective effort needed to propel the state towards a path of prosperity despite the current challenges.
