The emergence and proliferation of generative AI technology have revolutionised various aspects of human interaction with artificial intelligence, from seeking advice to expressing creativity. However, like any technological advancement, generative AI comes with its set of challenges and biases. The recent controversy surrounding Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini, and its response to political queries, particularly concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscores the urgent need for proactive regulation to  mitigate anti-Bharat AI bias.

The debate surrounding the transparency and impartiality of AI algorithms has once again come to the forefront, with concerns raised over the potential biases embedded within these systems. In a recent incident, queries regarding Prime Minister Modi’s political stance were met with responses that raised eyebrows. While questions about other political figures like former US President Donald Trump were met with vague responses directing users to conduct further research, queries about PM Modi seemed to elicit more pointed and potentially biassed responses from the AI chatbot.

The discrepancies in the AI chatbot’s responses have prompted the Bharatiya government to take action, with the Ministry of Electronics and Technology issuing warnings to Google regarding the inaccuracies and potential biases in its AI platform, Gemini. However, despite Google’s acknowledgment of the issues and its commitment to addressing them, concerns remain regarding the underlying biases ingrained within these AI systems.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has voiced concerns over Google’s AI chatbot potentially violating Bharat’s IT laws. He emphasised the need for platforms to adhere to legal obligations and ensure the safety and trust of users, highlighting the seriousness of the issue at hand.

While the government’s warnings to Google serve as a preliminary step, more comprehensive measures are required to address the systemic biases present in AI algorithms. A systematic evaluation of AI chatbot responses to a range of political topics concerning Bharat, including issues such as the Ram Mandir, farmers’ protests, treatment of minorities, and caste dynamics, is imperative to assess the extent of bias within these systems.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised by journalists and intellectuals regarding the systemic biases inherent in Google’s AI algorithms. Noted author Douglas Murray has highlighted instances where Google’s algorithms display biases, particularly in its depiction of historical events and figures. Murray argues that Google’s quest for diversity and fairness in its algorithms often leads to an overindulgence of bias, thereby perpetuating ideological agendas.

The issue of AI bias extends beyond Google’s algorithms, with Project Veritas uncovering evidence of anti-conservative bias within the company. Internal documents leaked to Project Veritas reveal discussions among Google employees regarding fairness in machine learning algorithms and the need to avoid stereotyping and biases. The revelations underscore the need for transparency and accountability within tech companies to address biases embedded within AI systems.

Renowned scholar Rajiv Malhotra has extensively documented the inherent biases present in AI models in his book “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Power: 5 Battlegrounds.” Malhotra argues that tech companies exploit user data to develop AI models that perpetuate political indoctrination and manipulation, highlighting the ethical implications of unchecked AI development.

In light of these concerns, it is imperative for Bharat to establish robust regulatory frameworks to oversee technology platforms like Google. Mere warnings and statements are insufficient to address the complex challenges posed by AI bias. A comprehensive policy mechanism that promotes transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI development and deployment is necessary to safeguard Bharat’s democracy and ensure the integrity of its political discourse.

The recent controversies surrounding AI bias highlight the urgent need for proactive regulation in Bharat. Addressing biases embedded within AI algorithms is essential to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness in the digital age. By taking decisive action to regulate technology platforms and promote ethical AI development, Bharat can mitigate the risks posed by anti-Bharat AI bias and safeguard its democratic values.
