Marathi Language Day, or Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Diwas, is an annual celebration that honours the cultural and literary legacy of the Marathi language. Celebrated on February 27 each year, this day is dedicated to promoting Marathi literature and language among the people of Maharashtra and Marathi-speaking communities worldwide.
Marathi, renowned for its literary richness, has been home to eminent poets, writers, and scholars whose contributions have profoundly influenced literature and art. Dating back centuries, Marathi is one of India’s oldest languages and has played a significant role in shaping the cultural fabric of the region.
Marathi Language Day holds particular significance as it commemorates the birth anniversary of Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, fondly known as Kusumagraj, a stalwart of Marathi literature. Kusumagraj’s profound impact on Marathi literature earned him the prestigious Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honour. His works, spanning across genres such as poetry, novels, essays, and dramas, addressed pressing social issues, including freedom, justice, and poverty.
Notably, Kusumagraj’s influence transcended literary boundaries, with his poetry collection “Visakha” serving as a source of inspiration during the Indian independence movement in 1942. To honour his enduring legacy, the star cluster ‘star in the gateway of heaven’ was christened as ‘Kusumagraj’ on February 27, 1996, through the International Star Registry in Sweden.
In 1964, Kusumagraj served as the President of the All India Marathi Literary Conference held at Madgaon. An organisation named ‘Kusumagraj Pratishthan’ has also been set up in Nashik in his memory. This year marks Shirwadkar’s 112th birth anniversary.
Throughout his illustrious career, Kusumagraj received numerous accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award for his famous ‘Natsamrat’ in 1974. He was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan Award in 1991, and the Jnanpith Award in 1987, underscoring his profound impact on Marathi literature and culture.
Marathi Language Day is observed with fervour in Maharashtra, where it serves as a platform to promote Marathi literature, culture, and heritage. The day is marked by a myriad of cultural programs, literary events, poetry recitations, and seminars organised across the state. Educational institutions also play a pivotal role in fostering an appreciation for the Marathi language among students through competitions and activities.
The government of Maharashtra actively supports initiatives to promote Marathi language and literature, aiming to enhance its usage in official and administrative communication. Marathi Language Day underscores the importance of preserving and promoting regional languages in India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
