Unearthing The Spiritual Heritage: Centuries old murti of Bhagwan Vishnu & Shivling emerge in river Krishna of Raichur

In a remarkable archaeological discovery, ancient murti of Bhagwan Vishnu and ‘Shivling’ has been unearthed from the bed of the Krishna River during the construction of a bridge near Shakti Nagar in Raichur, Karnataka. Dating back to the 11th century, these artefacts are believed to belong to the Kalyana Chalukyas dynasty

In an important archaeological discovery, two ancient murtis, one depicting Bhagwan Vishnu and the other a Shivaling, were unearthed from the Krishna River during the construction of a bridge near Shakti Nagar in Raichur City. The discovery has been attributed to the ongoing bridge construction over the Krishna River on the Raichur and Telangana borders.

The artefacts, believed to be from the 11th-century Kalyana Chalukyas dynasty, were found in the riverbed by the construction team. The recovered murtis include one portraying the Dasavatar of Bhagwan Krishna and another featuring a Linga symbolising Bhagwan Shiv. The centuries-old relics provide a glimpse into the rich historical and cultural heritage of the region.

Renowned historian Padmaja Desai, while speaking to the media, confirmed the historical significance of the murti, linking them to the 11th-century Kalyana Chalukyas dynasty. Desai suggested that the deliberate submersion of the murtis in the river could be traced back to a strategic move during inter-religious wars. This act may have been carried out to safeguard the artefacts from potential threats during periods of conflict.

Raichur, with its historical prominence, has witnessed over 163 battles and has been ruled by various royal families. Historians speculate that the murtis may have been immersed in the river as a protective measure against the onslaughts of Bahamani Sultans and Adil Shahis prevalent during the time.

Officials from the archaeological department promptly inspected the unearthed murtis and subsequently relocated them to secure locations. The stones used for carving the idols are identified as green mixed rock, a characteristic indicative of the Kalyana Chalukya era. Archaeological experts are engaged in further research to unravel additional details about these centuries-old artefacts.

The discovery holds significance not only for its archaeological value but also for shedding light on the religious and cultural practices of the bygone era. As the archaeological department delves deeper into the research, it promises to offer valuable insights into the region’s rich history and heritage. The centuries-old Lord Vishnu idol and Shivaling add to the cultural tapestry of Karnataka, preserving the legacy of the Kalyana Chalukyas dynasty.
