In a press conference held at Haryana Bhavan in New Delhi, Dr Ashwani Mahajan, the national co-convenor of Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, emphasised the detrimental impact of unbridled globalisation on the manufacturing sector. Dr Mahajan highlighted a significant decline in the manufacturing sector’s share from 21.5 percent in 1998-99 to 16 percent in 2017, attributing it to a substantial reduction in the average weighted tariff from 23.5 per cent in 2004 to less than 7 per cent in 2005-06.

Addressing the press, Dr Mahajan underscored the adverse effects on employment opportunities due to this decline in manufacturing. He acknowledged the positive impact of the Make in India initiative and the subsequent Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaign by the Modi Government in revitalising the manufacturing sector, leading to the recovery of lost employment opportunities and the creation of new avenues for employment. Dr. Mahajan urged the need to sustain and strengthen these efforts.

Reflecting on India’s historical journey, Dr. Mahajan noted the country’s failure to capitalise on the Industrial Revolution 1 and subsequent missed opportunities. However, he highlighted India’s current prominence in the 4th Industrial Revolution, showcasing advancements in technology such as UPI, AI, robotics, drones, space, and software. The press conference aimed to shed light on critical issues affecting the Indian economy and the importance of fostering indigenous manufacturing capabilities.

Amidst the challenges brought to light during the COVID-19 pandemic, the shortcomings of globalisation were exposed, particularly in the reluctance to share vital vaccine manufacturing materials, especially with developing economies. The deficiencies in the global value chain became evident during this unprecedented health crisis.

In response to these challenges, Swavalambi Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) was initiated, embarking on a mission to restore India’s historical standing as the Golden Bird of entrepreneurship. Launched officially on January 12, 2022, the SBA recently completed its two-year journey, dedicated to fostering an unemployment-free, poverty-free, and prosperous India.

The initiative began with the collaboration of eight organisations focusing on various sectors such as labor, farming, cooperatives, small enterprises, education, and consumer affairs. Presently, the SBA boasts the participation of 32 organisations united in the pursuit of its objectives.
