Chhattisgarh: Security personnel avert major tragedy, unearth and destroy IED weighing 15kg in Sukma

Security forces in Sukma averted a major attack after they unearthed and destroyed a heavy-weight Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near the forest of Potkapalli on Monday, January 08.

According to the reports, a joint team of the Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF) and district police force was out on a combing operation under the Kistaram police station limits when the team detected the IED planted by the extremists. The security personnel then successfully unearthed the IED and diffused it subsequently.

In a video about the incident that is doing the rounds on the internet, the personnel can be seen destroying the recovered IED. It’s been reported that the unearthed IED weighed around 15 kilogrammes, suggesting a major plot to harm the security force’s advancing parties.

The development occurred hours after the security forces, in another operation launched in the forest area of Bijapur, unearthed a similar IED, weighing around 5 kilogrammes.

The personnel of CRPF, District Reserve Guards (DRG) and Bastar fighters were out on a combing operation in Ganglur region when they came across the planted IED, following which a Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was called at the spot to diffuse the IED.

It is pertinent to mention here that the extremists planted IEDs in the region still infested by them with the aim of harming the team of security personnel out on search operations in the remote forest areas.

Earlier, in a similar operation launched in the Palnar-Sawnaar of the Bijapur district, security personnel recovered and destroyed as many as 21 IEDs planted near the roadside by the outlawed Maoist outfit.

It was then reported that the IEDs were attached to a pressure switch system and were planted with a gap ranging from 10 to 50 meters.

Three held in connection with attack on CRPF

In other news, the security personnel in a separate operation launched in Pandumetta hills under Jagargunda police station limits of Sukma nabbed three persons allegedly involved in the deadly attack on the security forces

All of the detained individuals were allegedly part of the attack on the security forces in which a CRPF’s personnel Sudhakar Reddy was martyred in December last year, suggests reports.

The nabbed accused have been identified as Midiam Podia, Korsa Dhurva, and Madkam Handa, all associated with the Dankaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangh (DAKMS), a frontal outfit of the banned CPI Maoist.

It is to be noted that the security forces have intensified the search operations in the Maoist-infested areas of Chhattisgarh and adjoining regions after the extremists triggered a string of IED explosions in separate parts of the State in December last year.

Earlier, the security officials of Sukma also held a high-level security meet with their counterparts in the neighbouring Malakangiri district of Odisha to review their preparedness in holding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the region peacefully.
