On November 5, 2023, police arrested a Hafiz who taught in a madrasa in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. Hafiz has been identified as Gulfam, who is accused of breaking into the house of a minor girl with the intention of raping her and threatening to kill her if she told anyone. The victim somehow saved herself from Gulfam’s clutches by screaming for help. The police is investigating and taking necessary action in this matter.

This case pertains to the Charthawal police station area of Muzaffarnagar district. The 15-year-old victim, resident of a village here, had lodged a police complaint on November 4. In the complaint, the victim had told that on November 3, she was alone in the house. Meanwhile, at around 1.30 in the afternoon, Karamat’s son Gulfam from the same village entered her house with bad intentions. After entering the house, Gulfam started forcibly taking the victim inside the room. When the victim protested, she was not only abused but was also threatened with dire consequences.

It is further stated in the complaint that seeing himself failing in his plans, Gulfam gagged the victim. However, after a lot of efforts, the girl somehow freed herself and made noise. Seeing the local people coming, Gulfam ran away. While leaving, he also threatened to kill the victim. The victim has also described two girls of the village as eyewitnesses to the incident that happened to her. In the complaint, strict action has also been demanded against Gulfam.

Gulfam used to teach in a local madrasa to impart religious education. On the complaint of the victim, the police have registered an FIR against the accused Gulfam under sections 452, 323, 354 and 506 of the IPC and 7/8 POCSO Act. The accused Hafiz has been arrested by the police and sent to jail. An investigation and legal action are being taken in the matter.

As per media reports, the victim’s father said that Gulfam roams around issuing receipts in the name of Madrasa and extorting money from people. The girl’s father said that this is the third incident committed by the accused in their house. It is claimed that even before this, Gulfam had molested the victim’s two sisters on different occasions.

However, at that time the people of the Muslim community gathered together and held a Panchayat and suppressed the matter. The girl’s father says that this time he will not come under anyone’s pressure and will give the strictest punishment to the accused. The victim’s family described the police action as satisfactory.
