Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on September 18 that the achievements of  Indians are being discussed everywhere and this is the result of united efforts during the 75 years of the history of the country’s Parliament.

Initiating the discussion on ‘Parliamentary journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – achievements, experiences, memories and learnings’ in the Lok Sabha, PM Modi spoke on a wide array of topics. PM Modi on significance of old Parliament building

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address in the Lok Sabha on September 18 said that the decision to construct the old building of the parliament had got its identity as the parliament house. Despite the fact that the decision to construct the building was taken by the foreign rulers, it is the Indians whose hard work and money was involved in it as they had toiled hard to construct it.

PM Modi recalls when he first entered the Indian Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says “…When I first entered this building (Parliament) as an MP, I bowed down and honoured the temple of democracy. It was an emotional moment for me. I could have never imagined that a child belonging to a poor family, living on the railway platform would ever be able to enter the Parliament. I never imagined that I would get so much love from people.”

Attack on the Indian Parliament

On the issue of the attack on the Indian Parliament on December 13, 2001, PM Modi said that it was difficult for him to forget those who laid down their lives to protect this temple of democracy. Speaking about the attack, PM Modi said, “There was a terror attack (on the Parliament). This was not an attack on a building. In a way, it was an attack on the mother of democracy, on our living soul. The country can never forget that incident. I also bow before those who took bullets to their chest to protect the Parliament and all its members, while fighting the terrorists…”.

Proud moment to induct African Union in G20 

On the induction of African Union in G20, PM Modi described it as an emotional moment, “India will be proud that when it was the president (of the G20), the African Union became its member. I cannot forget the emotional moment that when the announcement was made, African Union President said that perhaps he will break down while speaking. You can imagine the fortune India had, to fulfill such a huge hopes and expectations…It is India’s strength that it (unanimous Declaration) became possible…Under your chairmanship the P20 – Summit of G20 Parliament Speakers – you announced, will have our full support.”

Success of G20 

PM Modi says, “…Today, you have unanimously appreciated the success of G20…I express my gratitude to you. G20’s success is that of 140 crore citizens of the country. It is India’s success, not that of an individual or a party…It is a matter for all of us to celebrate…”

PM Modi lauded the scientists on the success of Chandrayaan 3

Prime Minister said that the success of Chandrayaan 3 has not only made India but the world proud.“This has highlighted a new form of India’s strength which is connected to technology, science, potential of our scientists and the strength of the 140 crore people in the country,” he said.

PM Modi talks about journey of Indian democracy from Nehru to Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Speaking about the 75 years long journey of India’s democracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “…The echoes of Pandit Nehru’s “At the stroke of the midnight…” in this House will keep inspiring us. In this House itself, Atal ji had said, “Sarkarein aayegi-jaayegi, partiyan banegi-bigdegi, lekin ye desh rehna chahiye. This echoes even to this day…”.

Historic bills passed in the old building of Parliament 

PM Modi said, “…Several historic decisions and solutions to issues pending for several decades were made in this House. The House will always say proudly that (abrogation of) Article 370 became possible due to it. GST was also passed here. One Rank One Pension was witnessed by this House. 10 per cent reservation for the Economically Weaker Section was successfully allowed in the country for the first time without any dispute”.

PM Modi lauds members attending the parliament session despite ill health

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised those members of parliament who in the past despite ill health attended the session, thereby attaching due importance to the work says, “Many MPs attended the session despite health issues. During the COVID-19 crisis, our MPs attended the proceedings of both of the Houses and performed their duties…With the feeling that India’s growth journey should not be impacted, all the members considered this House as an important part of their duty…After independence, many critics thought about whether India would remain united or not but we proved all of them wrong… People’s trust in the Parliament remains intact.”

Amritkaal to inspire the nation

The light of the first dawn of Amritkaal, a new faith in the nation, new confidence, new enthusiasm, new dreams, new resolutions and new strength of the nation is filling it,” he added in his speech.

PM Modi hails contribution of women MPs 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded the contribution of women MPs in strengthening the roots of parliamentary democracy in India. In his speech, PM Modi said, “Over 7,500 members have so far contributed to both Houses; about 600 women MPs have enhanced the dignity of both Houses.”

During five days of the special session of Parliament, its journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – achievements, experiences, memories and learnings will be discussed.
