The Republican party’s presidential candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy, believes that a strong relationship between India and the United States of America will help the US in reducing dependency on the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The US is highly dependent on the East Asian Nation economically.

In a video message with the media, he stated, “The US is economically dependent on China today, but with the stronger relationship with India, it becomes easy to declare independence from the Chinese relationship.

US Dependence on China

China, the world’s second largest economy, remains the biggest source of imports in the US. American companies have huge manufacturing networks in China and rely on Chinese consumers.

Last year, the bilateral trade hit an all-time high of USD 690.6 billion. US imports from China reached USD 536.8 billion, accounting for about 17 per cent of its total imports. Exports to China were USD 154 billion, 7.5 per cent of total US exports to the world, according to US media reports

The US should also have a stronger strategic relationship with India, even a military relationship in the Andaman Sea. Knowing that India, if necessary, could block the Malacca Strait, where China actually gets most of its oil supplies from West Asia. So, there are areas for real improvement in the India-US relationship.

“We strongly support India’s goal to grow its economy in an inclusive way. The more India grows, the better it is for India, the US, and the entire world. A prosperous India will have more resources to help address global problems.

The US needs to focus on Communist China, which is the topmost threat to the US. Ramaswamy said that “from nuclear defence to cyber-attacks, electromagnetic pulse strikes and nuclear missile capabilities, that is where we need to focus our attention and make sure that we are no longer dependent on our true enemy, Communist China, for our modern way of life.

Economic Strength of India

The Biden Administration’s point person for South Asia had earlier said that the US wants to be a part of the Indian economic miracle. “We want to be a part of the Indian economic miracle, “said the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Affairs, Donald Lu.

In one of its reports by the investment banking elite organisation, Goldman Sachs said that India, currently the fifth largest economy in the world, will transform into the second largest economy by 2075, even surpassing Japan, Germany, and the US itself.  India is currently ranked as the fifth largest economy after Germany, Japan, China, and the US.

Janet Yellen’s Visit to China

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the US Treasury, Janet Yellen, who was on a four-day visit to Beijing in July this year, said that the United States and China have many disagreements, and they must be communicated clearly and directly.

The main aim of the visit was to establish and deepen ties with China’s new economic team, reduce the risk of misunderstanding, and pave the way for cooperation in areas such as climate change and debt distress. She reiterated that Washington was not seeking to decouple from the Chinese economy, adding that doing so would be disastrous for both countries and destabilizing for the world.

During the Visit, Yellen also asked China to support the US-led institutions like the Green Climate Fund to mitigate future crises.

Yellen is the second senior Washington official to visit Beijing in the last two months. The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, visited Beijing in June, making him the highest-ranking Washington official to visit Beijing in almost half a decade. He met President Xi Jinping and foreign minister Qin Gang.
