Two Jharkhand Jaguar jawans killed in encounter with Naxals in Chaibasa

A sub-inspector and a constable of the Jharkhand Jaguar Unit lost their lives after they had an encounter with the Naxals in the district's Chaibasa town

Hours before the nation commenced its celebration of 77th Independence day, as many as two personnel of Jharkhand Jaguar, a counter-insurgency specialized unit of Jharkhand state police were martyred in a late night development on Monday, August 14.

The fateful incident unfolded when the Jawans got trapped in a Maoist ambush and killed during a combing operation being carried out under the Maoist-affected Tonto police station limits of the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

‘The two jawans identified as Amit Tiwari and Gautam Kumar were killed in a Maoist ambush, further details are awaited,’ West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Shekhar told PTI.

It’s been reported that Inspector Amit Tiwari had joined the state police in 2012, he has recently became a father and had only seen his newly born son in pictures sent to him on mobile.

The development occurred days after another personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed in an exchange of fire between the security forces and the Maoist in the same region on Friday, August 11

The deceased Jawan was identified as Sushant Kumar Khuntiya, a personnel of the BDS unit of the CRPF 60th battalion. Sushant, a resident of Anandpur of Keonjhar district of Odisha had joined the paramilitary force in 2011 and specialised in bomb disposal. He was integral to several significant operations launched against the Ultras in the insurgency hit Saranda region.

It is to be noted that the security forces in recent months in Jharkhand have been running a major offensive against the left wing insurgent, under which various specific operations have been carried out in the erstwhile bastions of Maoist such as Budha Pahad, forcing the cadres of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) to look for the other hideouts or surrender.

Recently in another such operation a joint team of CRPF, Jharkhand Jaguar and police have unearthed and destroyed as many as 11 bunkers of the outlawed CPI Maoist operational as their Eastern Regional Bureau under Tonto police station limits of Chaibasa on Friday, August 11.
