A firing incident occurred on the premises of Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court at around 1:35 pm on July 5. As per officials, the firing incident occurred after a heated argument broke out between two groups of lawyers. “Two different groups of lawyers including office bearers allegedly shot in the air, due to a quarrel that broke out between them,” said the officials. No casualties were reported from the occurrence.

The situation is under investigation and a crime squad has been dispatched to the scene, said the officials. “A legal action is being initiated into the matter, and a crime team has also reached the spot, added the officials,” they said.

Condemning the firing incident at Tis Hazari Court premises, Bar Council of Delhi Chairman KK Manan announced that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine if the guns were licenced or not.

“Detailed inquiry into the matter will be undertaken. It will be inquired if the weapons were licensed or not. Even if the weapons were licensed, no lawyer or anyone else can use them like this inside or around court premises,” said Advocate KK Manan.

However, this is not an isolated incident, there have been multiple instances of gun violence in Delhi’s courts. In April, following a scuffle between two advocates and their one client, an incident of gun firing took place at the Rohini Court. However, the Delhi Police reported no casualties, but minor injuries to two people.

“A quarrel between two advocates, namely Sanjeev Chaudhary and Rishi Chopra, and a public person named Rohit Beri took place at around 9.40 AM as they entered gate number eight (8),” said Delhi Police.

“We are deeply anguished with whatever has happened in the court today. While a few lawyers were trying to calm the situation involving a client misbehaving with his advocate, this policeman came with his AK 47 and shot fire at the ground. The pieces of the fired bullet shell have injured one of the advocates near the stomach and a local man,” said Advocate Rajeev Tehlan, Ex-President of Rohini Court Bar Association.

Meanwhile, another incident of gun violence occurred in a Delhi Court. In April, a woman facing several cases of fraud was shot at by a debarred lawyer in Delhi’s Saket Court Complex. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South, Chandan Chowdhary said, “An incident of firing was reported from Saket court today. A man fired four rounds out of which three bullets hit the woman and a lawyer. They were taken to hospital and their condition is now stable. Both of them have been discharged from hospital.”

Police said that the woman, identified as Radha was shot at by the accused, with whom she was undergoing a legal battle in a case of cheating. Multiple teams had been constituted to nab the suspect, who fled after shooting at the woman.

“An FIR was registered in December in which the victim of today’s incident is accused. The woman had taken money from the accused on the promise of doubling it, and both of them had come to the court related to the matter. Several other cases of fraud are also lodged against the woman. The man was an advocate here for a long time and was in his uniform at the time of the incident,” DCP South said.
