On June 30 evening, the severed head of a buffalo was found near a Hindu temple on Nala Road in the West Gorakh Park area of Northeast Delhi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey said that on June 30 they received a call at 5:30 pm, the caller informed them that a severed head of a buffalo was found on the road outside a temple on Nala Road, West Gorakhpark in Welcome.

Soon after the police nabbed 27-year-old Muslim man Azeem and a boy aged 16, both residents of Babarpur in Delhi in connection with the incident.

In a video that has now surfaced on social media, the severed head of a buffalo could be seen lying on the road near the temple premises.

A large crowd of Hindus were also seen standing outside the temple and discussing the matter. One man from the crowd was seen removing the dead remains from the road using a newspaper.

The Welcome police initiated a probe into the matter and found that two miscreants on a scooter dumped the buffalo’s head near the temple.

“Acting swiftly on the information that a severed head of a buffalo was found on a roadside under the Welcome police station, the police of the North East district have arrested two accused”, the senior officer said.

“People are urged to help the police in maintaining peace in the area. And don’t spread any kind of rumours,” the statement by police said. The Welcome Police later took possession of the severed head of the buffalo.

A case has been registered under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.), 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., of any value or any animal of the value of Rs 50 or more) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and further investigation is underway, the DCP said.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that miscreants have thrown meat pieces outside or inside temple premises in a desperate attempt to provoke Hindus.

Earlier last year in July, pilgrims participating in the Kanwar yatra staged a protest in the Muslim-dominated Seelampur area in Delhi after they discovered that a piece of meat was thrown at one of the Kanwars making the holy Ganga water impure.

The Kanwariyas, hailing from Alwar, Rajasthan were on a 14-day of Kanwar Yatra in which they fetch the holy Ganga water from Haridwar for the Shiv temple in Alwar. The Kanwariya had walked continuously for seven days and had reached Seelampur on July 19 which is a Muslim-dominated area. The Kanwariyas had set up a camp near the Seelampur Metro station parking. The Yatra was interrupted after the Kanwars on their way back to Alwar discovered that some unidentified person had thrown a piece of meat at the Kanwar outside the camp.
