Silchar: Communal tension broke out in Silchar City in the Cachar district of Assam on June 29. People vandalised several vehicles in the Panchayat road area of southern Assam city as the tension escalated between both communities. Hindu people in the locality said that commuters were stopped by Muslim youth after the Namaz and innocent commuters were subjected to attack and communal slurs. Muslims alleged that a few people allegedly entered the home to investigate alleged slaughtering activities and created a ruckus.

Tension escalated in the Panchayat road area after members of people from both communities gathered in large numbers, intensifying the situation. Local shopkeepers said that a group pelted stones and several people were injured in the attack. Cachar Police acted swiftly, and the situation was quickly brought under control.

Kakan Jyoti Saikia, DIG of the Southern Range, said that people should not believe the rumours as the situation is under control now. We have identified several sensitive areas and deployed additional forces to establish dominance. Investigations are on to find out the root cause of the situation, and action will be taken as per the law.

Cahchar SP Numal Mahatta said the police spoke to both communities and explained the situation. A few people were injured in the clash and shifted to Silchar Medical College Hospital. We appeal to the people to maintain peace and communal harmony and avoid misleading rumours spreading in social media, SP Mahatta added.

Even though the situation is under control in the city after the timely intervention of the Cachar police, the situation remains tense in several sensitive localities. Additional forces, including columns of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), have been deployed in sensitive localities of the city.
