Imphal: The situation in violence-hit Manipur has improved on May 6 after the intervention of central security forces. Director General of Police P Doungel informed that several security forces, including Rapid Action Force (RAF), BSF, and CRPF had been deployed in Manipur, besides several companies of Army and Assam Rifles were engaged to control the violence across the State.
Central Reserve Police Force chief Kuldeep Singh and Additional Director-General of Police (Intelligence) Ashutosh Sinha have been given the charge to command the ongoing operations against miscreants and militants involved in the latest violence in the State, the DGP informed.
Army, Assam Rifles and Air Force, along with civil administration, have worked tirelessly in the past approximately 48 hours to restore law and order and bring back normalcy in Manipur, an official statement said on May 5 evening.
Prompt response by Security Forces led to the rescuing of thousands of civilians stranded in the violence, the statement reads.
Immediate and timely response by the Army, Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces brings Churachandpur, KPI, Moreh and Kakching under firm control with no major violence reported since May 4 night, mentioned in the statement.
It should be mentioned that Imphal East and West districts witnessed sporadic incidents of arson and attempts by inimical elements to establish a blockade, towards which a firm and synergised response coupled with the induction of additional columns ensured control of Security Forces over the situation, said the official statement released by Manipur Government home department.
Proactive rescue operations, the conduct of flag marches, area domination, and interaction with locals/ influencers to reassure them of their personal safety were some of the major activities that were and are being undertaken.
Approximately 13,000 civilians have been rescued and are currently staying in various ad-hoc boarding facilities specifically created for Company Operating Bases and Military Garrisons.
IAF undertook continuous sorties from two airfields in Assam employing C17 Globemaster and AN 32 aircraft. Indian Army remains committed to restoring law and order and appeals for peace, and urges all communities to shun the path of violence, a statement by the Indian Army stated.
As Indian Army and the Assam Rifles continue their efforts to evacuate and provide assistance to affected people in violence-hit Manipur, locals praised the efforts of security forces and thanked them for providing a “security blanket”, the statement added.
Thousands of people from the bordering districts have taken shelters in neighbouring Assam in Cachar and Dima Hasao districts. The Assam Government has provided adequate security and relief materials to the people and ensures their safety till they return home after the situation normalises in Manipur.
