Guwahati: Saying no to easy money that amounts to Rs.15-20 Lakhs takes a lot of character, conviction and honesty. But 2 Assam police home guards have shown that character by refusing a bribe of 20 lakhs. Not only they refused the bribe, the duo, along with the Village Defence Party (VDP) secretary, seized drugs amounting to Rupees 40 crores in the Karimganj district of Assam. DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said,” Happy to say that we have people like this in Assam Police , and I am immensely proud of this fact.”
According to reports on January 17, 2023, at 3:30 AM, Home Guards Anupam Malakar and Jashim Uddin, after a brief chase, were able to stop a Maruti Alto car that tried to evade them earlier. The Home Guards also summoned Amit Pal, Secretary of the local VDP unit, to the spot.
On being cornered, the drugs paddler who was driving the car Mohammed Hadius Zaman, tried to bribe the Home Guards Anupam Malakar and Jashim Uddin with 15-20 Lakhs of Rupees to let him and his consignment of drugs to escape. But the trio refused the huge amount and acted according to the law.The trio then informed local police of Karimganj Police, who later recovered 7,59,200 Yaba tablets from the car.
The market value of this haul is around Rs.40 Crores. This is, in fact, the biggest haul of Yaba Tablets in Assam.
DGP Mahanta Said, “Such honesty, dedication to duty! In order to show our appreciation for the trio for this feat, they were called to APHQ on January 18.
All three were awarded with a cash prize of Rs.50,000 each along with a certification of appreciation. We are so proud of each of them! They reflect the true spirit of Assam Police!””The drug peddler Hadius Zaman was arrested. We have registered a case under NDPS Act, and further investigation has been going on,” said the superintendent of Karimganj police Padmanav Baruah.
Earlier in June 2021, Borsing Bey, another home guard posted in Karbi Anglong district, hit the headlines when he refused to take a bribe from drug dealers and helped the police seize 3 kg of high-grade crystal methamphetamine worth Rs 12 crore.
The Himanta Biswa Sarma Cabinet, on June 24, 2021, decided to appoint Borsing Bey as a constable in the Assam police and awarded with 1 lakh Rupees in cash.
Home guard Borsing Bey had played a key role in intercepting a truck from Manipur and recovering the methamphetamine tablets. Two women from Tamil Nadu and a man from Manipur, arrested later, had offered him a “huge bribe” for letting them go. But Bey refused it and immediately informed the police patrolling team.
