Rising from scratch, Pele, through his hard work and brilliant skills coupled with able captaincy, reached the zenith of the soccer world. He charmed humanity with his superb playing skills. His inspiring legacy will be long cherished. My last salute to him. The king of football is dead; long live the king, and his passion.”

Pele died on December 29, 2022, after a long battle with colon cancer. The legend footballer was born in Tres Coracoes, an inland city roughly 155 miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro – in the year 1940.
Pele – named Edson Arantes initially do Nascimento – started playing for Santos at the age of 15 and the Brazilian national team a year later. The World first saw his dazzling ability in 1958 when he made his debut in the World Cup at the age of 17.
In his international career, Pele played four World Cups and won thrice (1958, 1962 and 1970) for Brazil, marking as the only player to attain this unique milestone. Besides his football career, he also served as ‘Goodwill UNICEF Ambassador’ for many years, promoting peace and support for vulnerable children.
