Guwahati: BJP is heading for a landslide victory in the civic body elections to be held on 6 March for 977 municipality wards across Assam. The ruling BJP already won in 60 wards uncontested. The saffron party won a majority of seats in three major municipality boards in North Guwahati under Jalukbari constituency represented by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Lumding and Sotia to form the board of its own. BJP is contesting in 833 wards, and alliance partner AGP is contesting in 92 wards.
A senior spokesperson of state BJP, Ranjib Sarma, said the opposition parties led by Congress are now becoming irrelevant in state politics. Sarma claims that most of the heavyweight leaders of the Congress party, including former state president Ranjha Sabha MP Ripun Bora, MP Pradyut Bordoloi, former minister Rockybul Hussain, couldn't find candidates in most of the wards in their respective constituencies. Minister and government spokesperson Pijush Hazarika said opposition parties, including Congress, AJP, AIUDF, Raijor Dol, don't have any presence in the election field. BJP will win 80 per cent of the ward in the civic body election.
Likewise, the Congress party surrendered in the Majuli by-polls and made AJP the scapegoat. BJP candidate Bhubon Gam will win the by-election with a record margin against the AJP candidate, Hazarika added. The world's largest river island Majuli will go for a by-pool on 6 March. Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal vacated the seat after being elected to the upper house in November 2021. Congress party didn't file any candidate there and gave it to alliance partner AJP led by ex AASU leader Lurin Jyoti Gogoi.
