The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday (January 3) confiscated assets worth around Rs 40 lakh of a notorious Maoist Ram Babu Ram alias Ranjan, in Bihar.
Under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the property belonging to the family of the infamous Maoist has also been confiscated. During the seizure of the property, the officials had to face a massive protest from the villagers and the family of the Maoist. However, the ED team could confiscate the property with the help of the security personnel.
The Enforcement Directorate on Monday said, "It is evident that the notorious Maoist has used the proceeds of his criminal activities to buy immovable properties in the name of his family members." Rambabu Ram is the secretary of the Western Regional Committee of the banned Maoist outfit (CPI-M) and has been involved in Maoist related activities for the last two decades, and the properties were provisionally attached in March 2021, added an official of the ED.
Significantly, 28 FIRs have been registered against Rambabu and his family members in different police stations of Bihar under various sections of Arms Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosive Substances Act of the Indian Penal Code.
Maoist Rambabu has been leading the Maoist movement in North Bihar for the last two decades, and many FIR has been registered against him for the same. The Government of Bihar has also placed a bounty of Rs 5 lakhs on his head. A resident of Madhuban in the East Champaran district of Bihar, Rambabu has been absconding for so long.
