Guwahati: Most wanted criminal, drug and land mafia and Terror of Nagaon district in central Assam, Abdul Baset alias Iffu was injured in a police encounter on Monday (December 6) midnight. Abdul Baset alias Iffu was involved in kidnapping, land grabbing, dacoity, extortion and drug trafficking in central Assam for more than a decade. Local people in Nagaon said that due to the patronage of the then ruling Congress party leaders, Iffu became the undisputed king of crime in central Assam. From 2001 to 2016, when Congress was in power in the state, Iffu committed uncountable crimes like kidnapping, extortions, land grabbing, murders, drug trafficking, etc. But police were unable to touch him for his political connections. Interesting, Abdul Baset alias Iffu is a regular in the central Assam Congress circle.

Local people in Nagaon said that Iffu is close to then powerful Congress minister Rockybul Hussain, Nagaon Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi and Kaliabor Congress MP Gaurab Gogoi. The picture of Abdul Baset with all these congress leaders has been doing rounds on social media after the encounter by Nagaon police. According to Nagaon SP Anand Mishra, " Iffu and his gang is involved in drug trafficking on a large scale in the district. While police went for a raid in a hideout on Monday night, Iffu attacked the police team and tried to escape. Police fired, and the criminal sustained bullet injury."

The Nagaon police arrested seven other drug peddlers and crime partners of Iffu after the encounter and seized huge amounts of drugs from their possession. Arrested criminals are Md Kabir Hussain, Md. Wazed Ali, Md. Saju Rehman, Feroze Ahmed and Sanjay Dey and two more. Abdul Baset has been the president of the government Cooperative Samiti in Nagaon since 2013. He was elected uncontested because nobody dared to contest against him. But after the Monday night encounter, people were relaxed and hopeful that the district's crime rate would reduce.

In another encounter by Nagaon police on Sunday night, a repeat offender and wanted drug dealer Rafikul Islam sustained a bullet injury. Five more drug mafias were caught from Rafikul's den after a shootout. Nagaon police and CRPF recovered huge amounts of drugs from the spot in the joint operation.
