Imphal: In one of the major hauls of drugs in North East India, drugs worth over 500 crores were seized in Manipur on Monday (December 6) evening. The huge consignment of drugs was seized from a house owned by a woman from Myanmar. As per reports, 54 kilograms of brown sugar and 154 kilograms of Ice Meth were seized from a house in the Moreh town of Manipur near the Myanmar border. Local media reports that one Myanmar national was arrested with drugs worth over Rs 500 crore.

54.128 kg of suspected brown sugar worth around Rs 108 and 154.314 kg of crystal meth worth Rs 400 crore approximately were seized by a joint team of 34-Assam Rifles and CDO Moreh at Shiva Gate near Tamil Sangam Temple under Moreh Police Station, Tengnoupal district in Manipur.

As per the sources, the accused, identified as one Monkhai (21) s/o Thangemang of Kangpat, Myanmar, was arrested on Monday around 4 pm by the joint team at Shiva Gate. The house where the drugs were found is owned by a woman married to a Chinese national, sources said.

In November 2020, drugs worth 2300 crores were seized by Manipur police and Assam Rifles in a joint operation. The drugs included over 500 kgs of brown sugar smuggled from Myanmar. Drugs are seized frequently, and the traffickers are even armed on several occasions. Drug trafficking is linked with insurgency rise in the Northeastern state. Manipur's proximity to the "Golden Triangle" of illegal opium production, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar makes it a gateway for illegal drugs.
