Guwahati: In a major blow to the Maoist activity in Assam, a top moist leader surrendered before the Assam police on Tuesday (September 29) night. 49 years old wanted Maoist leader Tingraj Orang surrendered before the Additional DGP of Assam police (SB) Hiren Chandra Nath in Guwahati.
Orang was in charge of expanding the prescribed outfit CPI (Maoist) base in the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys.
According to police sources, Orang was the convener of the Assam state organising committee of CPI (Maoist), which was formed following a meeting of the Eastern Regional Bureau held on the Jharkhand-Odisha border in 2017.
After meeting ERB chief and notorious moist leader Kishan Da, former president of the Adivasi Chah Janagoshti Suraksha Committee, Orang formally joined the CPI (Maoist) in 2006. The 49-year-old leader was the General Secretary of the Barak and Brahmaputra Valley zonal committees of CPI (Maoist) in Assam.
Orang, who hails from Samuktola village in Dibrugarh district, and did not lay down any arms or ammunition. The police statement said that his surrender is a major setback for CPI (Maoist) in Assam, and the ASOC would be leaderless.
The Maoist leader, who belongs to the Tea garden community, underwent training in the deep forest of Jharkhand. In 2011, he was arrested from the Sundergarh district of Orissa and brought to Assam. He was released on bail later. He went back to the jungles after stepping out of jail and has remained elusive since then.
