Guwahati: The prime accused in the mysterious kidnapping of Ajit Das, a city-based businessman was killed in a police encounter last evening. According to the Assam police source, accused Kanwaldeep Singh Sidhu tried to flee with a firearm as he was taken to the city from Karbi Anglong, where he was arrested on Friday morning.
The incident took place near Daldali reserve forest of the hills district, where Sidhu was escorted by a police team towards Guwahati. The former officer of railways protection special force suddenly tried to snatch away a police weapon and then fired over the police team. In retaliatory police action, he sustained serious injuries and finally succumbed to it in the hospital. Sidhu faced suspension from his service in 2013 because of illegal activities.
Later he fully involved himself in various unlawful works including the arms smuggling from Nagaland to the other States of Bharat. He was assisted in the recent kidnapping of Das by three men in uniform along with a pharmacist (Moneswar Das).
The police have already arrested Raj Babu Singh (Assam police constable), Jiten Bailung (forest guard battalion constable) and Suraj Pator (home guard) along the pharmacist. They all were involved in kidnapping of Das from Kalibari area near Guwahati railway station on 23 June, who was later rescued by the police on 28 June.
