Guwahati: Assam is going to implement National Education Policy 2020 and granted autonomy to three institutes to grant degrees.
Assam is going to implement National Education Policy 2020, and as an initial step, three autonomous higher education institutions namely, North Lakhimpur College (Lakhimpur), Jagannath Barooah College (Jorhat), and Nowgong College (Nagaon), will take the lead, for which the management of those institutions would be granted more autonomy so that they can give degrees on their own.

Chairing a review meeting at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday, State Governor and Chancellor of all State universities professor Jagdish Mukhi asked the government to fill up all vacant faculty positions in these autonomous colleges at the earliest and ensure that no contractual teachers remain on the roll. Governor Mukhi also directed to transfer the secondary education courses in these institutions to other senior secondary schools so that they can concentrate only on quality degree courses.

In the presence of State education minister Dr. Ranuj Pegu, education advisor Dr. Mihir Kanti Choudhury, education principal secretary Kalyan Chakravarty, commissioner-secretary to the Governor Meenakshi Sundaram with other responsible officers and the principals of all three colleges, the Governor agreed to appoint a committee to study and suggest ways and means for these autonomous colleges to implement NEP 2020.

Minister Pegu believes that the concerned colleges using their autonomy would concentrate on rendering quality education. They should also focus on creating good human resources by producing more entrepreneurs (job givers rather than job seekers), he added. Speaking about the extension services, the minister emphasized that, under the package, educational institutions should not only focus on their enrolled students but also on educating potential non-enrolled students in their local communities.
