A petition has been filed in a Mathura court which claims idols of Shri Krishna from Mathura are buried below the Jama Masjid of Agra. The petitioner has requested the court to order the Archaeological Survey of India to carry out the radio test to track those idols.
The petitioner has provided a historical reference from a book by historian Jadunath Sarkar.
Quoting from ‘Anecdotes of Aurangzeb and Historical Essays by Jadunath Sarkar’, the petitioner has submitted “The grandest shrine of Mathura, Kesav Rai’s temple, built at a cost of 33 lakhs of rupees by the Bundela Rajah Birsingh Dev, was razed to the ground in January, 1670, and a mosque built on its site. ‘The idols were brought to Agra and buried under the steps of Jahanara’s mosque that they might be constantly trodden on by the Muslims going in to pray.”
Thakur Katra Keshav Dev Temple is the place in Mathura where Shree Krishna was born.
The petition becomes important in light of the fact that there are petitions in Mathura court with request to return the land of Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi to the deity. Currently, a part of it is occupied by the mosque.
Also, a court in Varanasi has ordered the ASI to carry out a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque to ascertain the claim of Kashi Vishwanath temple.
